It’s funny how things work out sometimes. With the pandemic protocols ensuring a limited preparation time, it certainly seemed to suit the strength-in-depth of the vastly experienced contenders most as Kilmurry Ibrickane and Cratloe renewed acquaintances in the football version while having shared the last five hurling titles, Sixmilebridge and Ballyea were anticipated to face-off for a historic Canon Hamilton showdown.
The Fireballs certainly lived up to their historical moniker as O’Callaghan’s Mills brushed aside the challenge of Inagh-Kilnamona to cement their place in a second semi-final in three years in Cusack Park on Sunday afternoon.
Wins at the Galway Track on Friday and Saturday night for Owner Trainer Donal Cooney proved the ideal start for the O’Callaghans Mills man who continued his winning streak in Cusack Park as part of the management team that led the Fireballs back into the last eight of the Clare SHC.
First half goals from Gary Cooney and Bryan Donnellan laid the foundations for this merited win by O’Callaghans Mills over Crusheen in this round 2 game in the senior hurling championship.
O’Callaghans Mills justfied favouritism when scoring a two point win on Saturday afternoon but the defeated Broadford have reason to be disappointed as they had opportunities to record a victory over their neighbours.
While it’s clearly next to impossible to accurately assess any team in this year’s senior championship, that arduous task is arguably doubled when evaluating O’Callaghan’s Mills.
