€150,000 FUNDING has been awarded to progress the design and planning of a proposed accessibility link connecting Lees Road and the Gort Road in Ennis.

The funding has been awarded under Category 1A of the Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund and was announced by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

The proposed Droichead na nGabhar project would provide a dedicated off-road pedestrian and cycle connection between John O’Sullivan Park at Lees Road and residential areas on the Gort Road.

The project would include a new bridge crossing of the River Fergus, segregated from road traffic, with the aim of improving access for walkers, cyclists and other vulnerable road users.

Mayor of Ennis Cllr Tommy Guilfoyle (SF) welcomed the funding, saying it would allow the project to move forward to its design and planning stage.

“I am delighted to see funding approved for the design and planning stage of this important project,” he said.

“Droichead na nGabhar has the potential to be a transformative link, improving access to the fantastic facilities at Lees Road and making it easier and safer for people of all ages and abilities to travel between local communities and Ennis town.”

Clare County Council Director of Service for Planning, Economic, Rural and Community Development, with responsibility for Ennis MD, Jason Murphy, said the funding would allow the council to progress the work needed to advance the project.

“This funding will allow Clare County Council to progress the design and planning work needed to advance this important active travel link,” he said.

“The project reflects our commitment to improving connectivity, accessibility and sustainable travel options for communities across Ennis.”
