THE entrance to Scariff Harbour is to be examined as part of the next phase of the town’s regeneration project, following calls to improve signage and raise awareness of the facilities available.

The issue was raised by Cllr Pat Burke (FG) at the September meeting of the Killaloe Municipal District, where he called on Clare County Council to engage with Waterways Ireland to improve the entrance to Dock Road and Scariff Harbour from the R352.

In a written response, Senior Executive Officer and Killaloe Municipal District Meetings Administrator Eoin Troy said the junction and entrance arrangements would be examined as part of the next phase of the Scariff Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF) project.

He said enhancements would be incorporated where feasible, taking account of design, safety, land ownership and available funding.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Burke said he had recently spoken to locals who were unaware of the harbour and its facilities.

He said the entrance was on a regional road but had limited signage directing people towards it.

“People are not aware of what’s down there,” he said.

Cllr Burke said greater awareness was needed, adding that while there were no shops at the harbour, it offered facilities and a good place to go for a walk.

He welcomed the council’s response.

Leas-Chathaoirleach of the Killaloe Municipal District Cllr Conor Ryan (FG) supported the motion, saying he had only discovered the harbour himself last year.

He said it was important to promote the “hidden gem” and the “fantastic facility” available in Scariff.
