Companies “who will bring data requirement” need to be enticed to set up in Co Clare, a Newmarket-on-Fergus representative has said.

Citing the “excessive electricity demands” in the greater Dublin area, Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) urged Clare County Council to request the Government and IDA “to increase efforts to attract industry including those who will bring data requirement to this region”. His proposal was seconded by Cllr PJ Ryan (IND).

Cllr McMahon specified that he was not speaking about the Ennis Data Centre which is currently under awaiting a decision on whether it will be approved for planning.

“There will be 5000 students going into UL in the future, there 10,000 people working in Shannon Industrial Estate with 63 aviation based industries, aviation is on a recovery all over the world. Our Irish and aviation companies are moving on in a positive fashion,” McMahon stated.

He continued, “Ennis will hopefully reach city status in the next ten years. Could we make it attractive for a multinational to have a serious look at our county, we know data centres have to be planned overall to allow this to happen”.
