Winner of the Captain’s Prize at Dromoland Golf Club, Niall O’Connor better known as Pony surrounded by two of his supporters, Frank Melody and Niall Woods.
NEWMARKET-ON-Fergus senior hurler Niall O’Connor showed his versatility at the weekend when he won captain John O’Neill’s prize at Dromoland Castle golf club.
Niall had two strokes to spare over Brian Shally, completing the twenty seven holes in 107 with Shally on 109 followed by Ryan Enright also on 109.
They were followed by Mark Downes on 110, Robert Bailey on 110, Niall Woods on 112, Paudie Dorgan on 113, Brian Sheedy on 113 and Diarmuid McMahon on 113.
Brian Arthur won the gross with 80 while the category for handicappers of 20 and over was won by Darren Malone.
Other prize winners were Gareth O’Grady (front 9), Frank Melody (back 9), Eana McMahon (student), Simon Pereire (junior), Con Woods (past captain) and Charllie O’Neill (guest).

The captain’s prize to the ladies was won by Mairead Toomey with 75 from Colette Colleran who had a similar score. Katrina O’Neill was third with 76 followed by Mairead Bergin, also with 76 while Leslie O’Flynn won the gross. The nines were won by Michelle McCarthy and Sandra Moylan while Mairead Toomey won nearest the pin with Niamh McDermott winning the longest drive.
The 9 hole competition was won by Eimear Danaher from Joan Dunne.
East Clare Golf Club:
Captain Paul Hayes’ prize was played for at East Clare golf club last weekend when there was a big entry for the ladies, men’s and senior sections.
Winner of the captain’s prize to the ladies was Marie Donnellan (20) with 36 points and she won on a countback from Geraldine Finnegan (26) with Kathleen O’Brien (26) also on 36 points in third place.
The gross was won by Siobhan Shanahan while the nines were won by
Catherine Minogue (22) with 18 points (back nine) and Maria Kennedy (31) with 23 points for the front nine.
Eileen Donnellan won the longest drive while Margaret Lynch was nearest the pin.
The Get into Golf category, over 9 holes, was won by Deirdre Tuohy from Colette Ward.
Joyce Purcell, Ann Marie Ryan and Caroline Rochford won the team of three scramble.
Winner of the captain’s prize to the men was Colm Kelly (14) from John Carey (21) with third place filled by Dermot Hayes (17).
Tony Cleary won the gross while the category winners were Anthony Sweeney (13), Seamus Mason (16) and John Canney (22).
Pat Carey (12). won the long drive, Colm Hayes (16) won nearest the pin while the past captain’s category was won by Maurice Costelloe.
The captain’s prize to the senior men was won by Michael Hayes (18) with 47 points from Ger Hoey (21) with 43 points with third place filled by Michael Larkin:(19) with 37 points. The nines were won by Batt Skehan and Ger Lenihan. Fr. Gerry O’Brien had the longest drive while Teddy O’Hanlon was nearest the pin.
Woodstock Golf Club:
President Ken Horgan’s prize was played for at Woodstock at the weekend. The leading twenty one players after the 18 hole competition returned for a 9 hole play off on Sunday evening.
Chris McGrath (12) returned 106 for the twenty seven holes to take the top prize.
The best score was returned by Cian Ruane (10) with 103 but he was not eligible for the top prize as he did not have enough qualifying rounds played. Lucas Kelly (5) with 107 was third winning on the back nine from Gerry Kelly (11) who had a similar score. Kieran Cunnane (1) won the gross with 71 for eighteen holes.
The category winners were Ronan O’Looney (9) with 108, Sean Williams (13) with 110 and Tom O’Donohue (20) with 114.
Other prize winners were Kieran Patton (21) with 77 (past president), Johnny Clune (9) with 74 (seniors section) while the sponsors prize was won by Ronan Horgan (10) with 72.
Winners in the 2’s competition were Joe Green and Aidan Mulcahy, both at the 11th hole.
The president’s prize to the ladies, an 18 hole stableford competition, was won by Eilis Neville (24) with 32 points and she won on a countback from Aine Burke (34) with third spot filled by Deirdre Molyneaux (20) with 32 points.
The winner of the 9 hole stableford was Helen Frost O’Neill.
Ruth Nihill (13) was the junior girls winner with 30 points while the junior boys section was won by David Nihill (14) with 39 points.
The next major is the Lady captain’s prize (Chaye Kelly) which will be played for on July 4/5/6
The winner of the Bank holiday open singles was Ken Horgan (10) with 39 points from Mark McInerney (6) with 36 points.
The weekly open singles continues on this Thursday while the weekend competition will be the Holmpatrick cup qualifier, a fourball betterball competition. The winning pair will advance to the Munster regional finals which will take place in Woodstock on August 12. The winners advance to the All-Ireland Final at Mullingar on September 5 where the top prize is a golfing trip to Scotland. Entry fee is €7.50 per player and all proceeds go directly to Vision Ireland.
Kilrush Golf Club:
Mary Lyons (18) won the Bowman’s Lane Restaurant ladies 18 hole stableford competition at Kilrush last week with 37 points. She had one to spare over Edel Crowley (20) with Fiona Kinsella (11) a point further back in third place. Ailish Lorigan (20) also with 35 points was third.
Ennis Golf Club:
Ennis hosted the annual St Flannan’s College past pupils outing last week when the winner was Gerry Broderick (23) with 39 points. He had one to spare over Noel Pyne (7) with third place filled by Darragh Murphy (7) with 37 followed by John Finn (8) with 35. The gross was won by Ronan Herbert with 32 points.
The winner of the Ennis members category was Evan Lewis (17) with 40 points from Desmond Ryan (23) with 39 and John Gavin (16) also with 39 points. Andrew Whelan won the gross with 34 points.
Last week’s ladies competition was the Australian spoons, a scotch foursomes stableford competition which was won by Carmel Verling and Sinéad O’Sullivan with 42 points. The gross was won by Ann A. Gallery and Helen Gallery with 23 points and both pairings will represent Ennis Golf Club at the Munster regional final on July 17.
In the 9 hole ladies singles the overall winner was Marie Keane (21) with 20 points while the divisions were won by Yvonne Keohane (9) with 16 points, Nuala Healy (13) with 20 points and Claire Kennelly (22) with 18 points.
The Teresa Howard memorial 18 hole stableford competition for seniors was won by Ollie Kennelly (27) with 43 points from Michael Irwin (26) with 36 points with third spot filled by Tony Lawlor (13) with 35 points.
The Teresa Howard memorial 9 hole competition was won by Damon Murphy (10) with 18 points from Jim Hennessy (22) with 17 points with third place filled by Seamus Hanrahan (13) also with 17 points.
The Friday open singles was won by Senan Ryan (12) with 45 points from Redmond Condon (10) with 41 points while the gross was won by Sean Myatt (2) with 35 points.
Ennis went down to Lahinch on the 19th hole in the intermediate foursomes competition which was played in blustery conditions at Lahinch last week.
Gort Golf Club:
Friday’s 18 hole open singles at Gort was won by Anthony Burke (13) with 35 points while the ladies Friday winner was Sinead O’ Connor (27) with 42 points
The weekend’s men’s competition was an 18 hole stableford event sponsored by Glenn Cahill Car Sales Gort.
The winner was Ken Murray (28) with 41 points while the category winners were David Callanan (7) with 39 points, Cian Daniels (16) from Portumna with 37 points and Piaras O Dea (31) with 41 points. The gross was won by Sean Roche (10) with 30 points.
Monday’s open singles was won by Kieran Grimes (25) with 39 points while the category winners were Sean Roche (9) with 38 points, John Skehill (14) with 33 points and John Doody (28) with 35 points.
The ladies competition at the weekend was an 18 hole stroke medal competition, sponsored by Tara Books.
Category 1 was won by Ann Jordan with 73, category 2 by Sinead O’Connor with 73, category 3 by Jacinta O Grady with 73 and category 4 by Margaret Coleman with 65.
Ennis Chamber Classic:
The annual Ennis Chamber golf classic was held at Woodstock last Friday.
Sponsored by Campion Insurance the format was a champagne scramble. Led by John Skerritt, AIB won the event for the first time. The other team members were Ian Myatt, Seán Rouine and Evan Talty.

The EBS team were second followed by Eye Care Centre, the Old Ground Hotel and Essillor.
Winner of the longest drive was Ivan Cawley from Campion Insurance while the nearest the pin winner was Cormac Noonan, MHP Sellors.
