A MUNSTER quarter-final awaits the Ennis ladies Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy Team who were victorious over Mallow on Sunday.
Played in Mallow, the teams were level at 5-5 after round 1 of two legs. Rose Enright and Bridie Hanrahan won in spectaculars fashion by one stroke on the 20th hole. Ennis proceed to the Munster quarter finals where they will meet Dungarvan in July.
The team members were Helen Harnett and Attracta Williams, Bridie Hanrahan and Rose Enright, Ann and Helen Gallery, Anna Marie Darmody and Anne Kelly, Peg Hanrahan and Una O’Reilly. The substitute on the day was Betty O’Reilly and the team managers were Mary Lenihan and Della Burns who was deputising for Patricia Moroney.
There was disappointment for the men’s Jimmy Breun team who were beaten by Lahinch on Wednesday at Lahinch.
On the club front the Paddy Con trophy, a scotch foursomes competition, was won by Joe Downey and Michael Studdert (25) with 44 points. They had two to spare over Flan Glynn and John C McNamara (18) who, in turn, were two ahead of Kieran and Tom Fox (13). Gerry Bredin and Joseph Griffin (20) won the gross with 41 points.
Last week’s senior ladies 14 hole competition was won by Phil Butler, Maureen Moloney and Joan Tassie with 52.1. The 9 hole competition was won by Mary Glynn, Bernie Brooks, Mary McMahon and Anne McMahon with 29.3.
The ladies 18 hole scotch foursomes, the Eileen Murphy trophy qualifier was won by Patricia O’Reilly and Patrice Ryan (36) with 43 points from Ann A and Helen Gallery (20) who had a similar score. In third place with 40 points were Úna O’Reilly and Monica Finnerty (33).
Ann A and Helen Gallery will represent Ennis in the Eileen Murphy trophy final at Cork on Monday September 7.
The ladies 9 hole singles competition was won by Bernie Brooks (26) with 22 points, one ahead of Breege Hamel (28). The category winners were Carmel Verling (12) with 18 points, Josephine Tone (17) with 19 points and Deborah Glynn (20) with 20 points.
The Friday open singles, sponsored by Martin Ward golf, was won by Diarmuid Corry (16) with 39 points from Michael Lyons (5) from Birr Golf Club) with 38 with third place filled by Nuala Corry (26),also with 38 points. Ross O’Flaherty from Lahinch Golf Club won the gross with 37 points
Kilrush Golf Club:
The Young trophy was played for at Kilrush at the weekend when the winner was Neil Browne (6) with 63. He won because of a better back nine from Paul McGibney (19) who also returned 63. In third place, a stroke back, was Geremiah Brennan (14) with 64. Tom Browne (2) won the gross with 73
The Kilrush Credit Union ladies strokeplay competition last week was won by Grace Howard (37) with 69 net and she was one ahead of Miriam Saunders (25) with third place filled by Jean Lorigan (37) with 72 nett.
Anne Gallagher (13) won the gross with 90 while the nines were won by
Anna Moody with 34.5 and Ailish Lorigan with 36.0.
The P and M sponsored ladies 18 hole stableford competition was won by Fiona Kinsella (13) with 34 points. The category winners were Mary Nolan (20) with 26 points, Celia O’Grady (29) with 30 points and Joanne Haffey (52) with 30 ptoints.
Dromoland Golf Club:
Cathal Egan was the winner of the men’s stableford competition at Dromoland with 40 points and he won on a countback from Evan O’Meara who also scored 40 points.
Ian Mulready was third with 39 points followed by Frank Melody with 38 points. Killian Howard won the gross with 38 points.
The 9 hole competition was won by Con Ryan with 20 points from Dave Kenneally with 18 and Mark Skehan with 15.
The ladies 18 hole competition was won by Fran Feighery with 36 points from Leslie O’Flynn who had a similar score.
Majella Cotgreave won the 9 hole weekly competition with 21 points from Siobhan Fitzpatrick with 19 with third place filled by Siobhan Dyar with 17.
East Clare Golf Club:
East Clare hosted a Play in Pink day last week when the winners in the ladies section were Noreen Doyle, Ann Harte and Catherine Murphy with 70 points from Noreen O’Grady, Deirdre Tuohy and Joan Crotty with 65 points with third place filled by the Woodstock team of Ann Marie Russell, Margaret Ann Killeen and Marianne McGough with 63 points.
The winners in the men’s section were Danny Minogue, Darren O’Sullivan and Jackie McHugh with 67 points and they were one ahead of Pat McNamara, Brian Torpey and Iarlia McNamara with third place filled by Kieran Quinn, John Duffy and Kieran Kennedy, also with 66 points.
In the mixed team category the winners were Evelyn O’Brien, John Fahy and Ger Teefy with 70 points from Trish and Noel Nash and Ray Boyce with 68 points. In third place, also with 68 points were Breda O’ Loghlin, Willie Roche and Kieran McNamara.
In the ladies Australian Spoons competition the winners were Brid Hayes and Deirdre Tuohy with 42 points while the gross was won by
Eileen Donnellan and Siobhan Shanahan with 18 points.
The ladies 18 hole stableford competition was won by Maureen Clune (32) with 36 points from Teresa Tonna (30) with 32 points.
Last week’s senior men’s competition was won by Dominic Stuart, Martin McKeogh and Joe Fitzgerald from John Collins, Willie Roche and Chris Davis with third place filled by Jonathan Walsh, Martin Quinn and Jim Fahy.
Spanish Point Golf Club:
The ladies competition at Spanish Point last week was for the Mary O’Halloran Memorial cup.
The competition was won by Eimear Johnston with 40 points from Eileen Murrihy with 35 with third place filled by Elaine Rouine with 34 points. Fiona O’Boyle won the gross
Shannon Golf Club:
The men’s competition at Shannon last weekend was for the Memorial medal which was won by Wayne Regan (13) with 66. He was two ahead of Tony Higgins (8) with Eoin Collins (6) in third place, also with 68. They were followed by Ray Kiely (8) with 70, David Grimes (15) with 70 and John Hayes (7) also with 70. Edward Hickey (1) won the gross with 73.
Adam McMahon (4) won category A with 71, one better than Luke Hegarty (4).
Category B was won by Paul Hayes (15) with 71 with second place here going to Thomas Purtill (13), also with 71.
Kieran Joyce (21) was the category 3 winner with 73 from Michael Long (21) with 74.
Harry Grey (7) won last week’s 9 hole competition with 19 points while the winner of the men’s green tee challenge was Damian Casey (0) with 38 points.
Woodstock Golf Club:
In the AMR open singles at Woodstock last week Declan Reidy (7) was the category winner with 37 points and he has qualified for the grand final later this year. Category 2 was won by Mark Hogan (12) with 36 points while the category 3 winner was Jonathan Carrig (23) with 34 points.
Winners in the 2’s competition were Chris McGrath and Jason Considine, both at the 8th hole.
The scratch cup competitions took place at the weekend when the senior gross winner was Sean Myatt (2) with 72 while the nett winner was Ross Darmody (4) with 73. The junior scratch cup winner was Seamus Toomey (4) Adare Manor with 78 while the nett winner was Aidan Donnelly (5) Castletroy with 74.
At intermediate level Sean Kelly Jnr (9) won the gross with 79 while the nett winner was Mike Hogan (12) with 68. The minor winner was Barry Conway (16) with 82 while the nett winner was Tommy Flynn (18) with 66.
Winners in the 2’s competition were Sean Myatt (14th), Joe Green (11th), Michael Coughlan (8th), Robbie Dormer (14th), David White (8th) and Barry McNamara (6th).
The weekly singles continues on this Thursday while the weekend competition will be a club singles, a round of the Breen Building Design Woodstock Master Order Of Merit).
The senior cup team of Jason Considine, Kieran Cunnane, Sean Myatt, Lucas Kelly and Tony Nugent recorded a 4-1 win over Dromoland at the weekend. Aidan Mulcahy is the team manager.
The Jimmy Bruen team defeated East Clare, 2.5 to 1.5 to advance to the next round. Managed by Joe Greene the team members are Ross Darmody and Cathal Clune; Chris McGrath and Darren Russell, Johnnie Clune and Rob Catnwell, Paul Coote and Adrian Kearney.
Woodstock hosted a Play in Pink day on Tuesday raising funds for the Cancer Research Unit at University Hospital, Galway. The day was a huge success and raised €4,150.
Winners in the men’s section were Tony Nugent, Kieran Dromey, Jarlath Fahy and Nick Germaine with 108 points.
They had five to spare over Frank McEnery, Martin White, Noel O’Connor (Spanish Point) and Mike Gardiner. In third place with 98 points were Paddy Meehan, Brian Kilker, Dickie Pyne and Eugene Conroy followed by P J Carmody, Tony Neville, Liam O’Connor and Steve Lahiffe with 95 points.
The ladies section was won by Bridie Hanrahan, Anne Kelly, Maureen Lynch and Betty O’Reilly (all Ennis) with 96 points and they were two ahead of the all Shannon team of Aine Twomey, Susie Meehan, Carmel McMahon and Shauna Moylan.
In third place with 92 points were Mary McNamara, Eimear Johnston (Spanish Point). Eileen Holly (Ennis) and Marie McNamara followed by Evelyn Lyons (Lahinch). Sheila O’Grady (Kilrush), Assumpta Stack (Adare Manor) and Aine Burke with 83 points.
Lahinch Golf Club:
It has been a busy number of weeks of inter club action across a number of competitions for Lahinch.
The mixed fourball team managed by Maria Nolan and Ronan Ryder lost away to Dromoland (2.5/1.5) while the men’s junior cup team, managed by Mark Hassett and Duncan Cusack were also defeated away from home by Spanish Point (4&1). The ladies junior cup team managed by Stephanie MacGrath and Mary Sadlier also suffered defeat losing 4&1 to Limerick.
On the brighter side, the ladies senior foursomes team managed by Rose Doyle and Ina Nolan travelled to Kenmare and defeated Nenagh GC (2&1) to qualify for the West Munster semi-finals while the men’s Barton Shield team managed by Patrick Crowley defeated Ennis away from home by 11 holes to qualify for the West Munster finals which will be hosted by Ballyneety GC on July 11/12.
Last week the men’s Jimmy Bruen team managed by Thomas Neenan defeated Ennis by 2.5 to 1.5 to progress to the next round.
On this Saturday the mixed foursomes team managed by Maire Hanrahan and Gerry Pierse host Nenagh commencing at 12.30pm while on Sunday the Senior men managed by Ger Hartnett travel to East Clare for their second round tie in the Vincent Nevin competition with the match due to commence around 3.00pm.
Gort Golf Club:
The weekend’s men’s competition at Gort was an 18 hole singles V par sponsored by Minihanes SuperValu which was won by Niall Higgins (16) with 7up.
The category winners were Mike Grealy (10) with 1 up, Shane Byrne (15) with 4 up and Pat McNamara (22) with 5 up. Gary Rainsford (1) won the gross with 1 down.
In the ladies competition the winner of category 1 was Siobhan O’Connor (14) with 38 points. Fran O’Reilly (30) won category 2 with 40 points while Anne O’Connor (40) won category 3 with 39 points.
In Friday’s open singles Joe Moran (0)won category 1 with 39 points. Category 2 was won by Gerry Hooban (13) with 37 points while the category 3 winner was Neil O Halloran (31) with 40 points. The gross was won by Kris Finnegan (1) with 34 points.
The ladies open singles was won by Marie Carr (12) from Athenry golf club with 30 points.
Fanny O’Dea’s society:
Fanny O’Dea’s society’s captain, Alan Carmody’s prize was played for in Ennis on Saturday, sponsored by Tom and TJ Monahan.
The prize was won by the captain’s next door neighbour Michael Clancy who returned an impressive 41 points to win by three from Brian Conway. Declan Kelly was third with 37 points followed by Tom Monahan with 37 and Tony McMahon with 34.
Declan Conway won the gross while Alan Carmody was nearest the pin with Jack Faughnan winning the longest drive. Brian Gilligan and Jim Carmody won the nines while the past captain’s category was won by Peter O’Leary. The next outing will be in three weeks’ time when the members will travel to play Enniscrone and Westport.
