THE process to have the road leading from the R487 to Kilbaha Pier taken in charge by Clare County Council has begun after councillors backed the proposal at the July meeting of the West Clare Municipal District.
The motion was brought forward by Cllr Gabriel Keating (FG), who said the road is used by “many people”, including visitors who travel to nearby restaurants and may then wish to walk down to Kilbaha Pier.
He also highlighted that there is a private house located along the route and said taking the road in charge had been “on my agenda for quite a while”.
Cllr Keating thanked council officials for their response and welcomed their interest in the project, saying he was pleased that the process could now begin.
He said he would be relying on the support of his fellow councillors to progress the proposal and “get moving on the job”.
The motion was seconded by Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr Michael Shannon (FF).
In a written response, Senior Executive Engineer Alan Kennelly said that, if adopted by members, the motion would initiate the statutory process under the Roads Act 1993 for taking a private road in charge.
Mr Kennelly outlined that the process would involve public consultation, consideration of any submissions received, preparation of an engineer’s report, a further meeting of the municipal district and completion of post-consultation procedures before a final decision is made.
