NEW PLANNING proposals in Shannon have provided the opportunity to deliver “a proper traffic management plan” in Tullyvarraga.
Having previously called for a reduction of the speed limit on the Tullyvarraga Rd in Shannon where he claimed “the majority of buses are breaking the speed limits”, Cllr Tony Mulcahy (FG) has now put forward the case for a traffic management plan in the locality.
He requested Clare County Council to formally engage with St Conaires NS, Corlann (formerly known as the Brothers of Charity), Wolfe Tones GAA club and relevant neighbouring houses “to put in place a proper traffic management plan for the area. This is a matter of urgency as there are a number of new planning proposals for the area”. His proposal was seconded by Cllr Pat O’Gorman (FF).
St Conaire’s NS are currently undergoing design under the Safer Routes to School Scheme. Acting senior executive engineer in the Shannon Municipal District, Caimin Dillon explained, “this will focus on additional safety measures on approach to the school on Tullyvarraga Road”.
Corlann have this month lodged plans for a new respite centre in Gleann na Smol, Shannon. The plans are to demolish the existing dwelling house and associated outbuildings before constructing a new respite facility.
Martina Rynne, the Director of Services at Corlann Clare in correspondence to the Council said the organisation’s services in Shannon are currently limited by the number of rooms in the property they own. Corlann were provided with additional funding by the HSE in January for the provision of full-time residential respite in Shannon, however, due to limited spaces in their current building, they cannot use this funding to its full advantage. By developing 5 Gleann Na Smol, we will ensure that we utilize the funding provided by the HSE to maximum advantage,” Rynne stated. “This development is one that is welcomed by those we support in the Shannon area, by their families, by our staff and by the HSE”.
Staff in the Shannon MD “can arrange to meet and discuss with Corlann in relation to any development proposals prior to planning submission with a view to provision of additional safety measures,” Dillon stated in response to Cllr Mulcahy’s motion.
Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of the Shannon MD, Cllr Mulcahy reiterated his stance on the buses, “the volume and speed of buses on the road is horrendous”. He continued, “We’ve a chance to sort out the road by St Conaires and the GAA pitch”. “Whatever engagement we can get now can lead to a final solution and get on top of it, it will be a day respite service with one residential unit operated by Corlann which were the Brothers of Charity and I welcome all these developments,” Mulcahy said.
