In what is turning out to be a very competitive Division 1A of the Clare Cup, Kilmaley remain the only unbeaten team.

Sixmilebridge ended Crusheen’s winning streak over the weekend with reigning champions Feakle continuing to impress.

Earlier in the week, Smith O’Briens accounted for Clarecastle in Division 1B, the meeting of Scariff and O’Callaghans Mills is scheduled for Tuesday while the clash of Whitegate versus St Josephs Doora/Barefield was postponed.

First half dominance steers Sixmilebridge to victory

A strong first half showing which saw them open a six point lead, 0-10 to 0-4, helped Sixmilebridge to their second successive victory in Division 1A of the Clare Cup when they accounted for hitherto unbeaten Crusheen at the latter’s venue on Saturday.

Crusheen did better in the second half and managed the game’s only goal through Jamie Fitzgibbon but they had left themselves too much to do and the visitors held on for victory on a day when nine players shared in their impressive points tally.

Recently retired Galway senior player Aidan Harte from Gort has joined the Crusheen management team which is headed up by Kevin Sheehan. The All-Ireland winning defender was part of the management team which guided St Joseph’s Tulla to their maiden Dr Harty Cup title in February.

Sean Stack who is in his first year as Bridge boss continues to experiment and give youth its opportunity with seven of the starting fifteen yet to feature in the Clare SHC.

A haul of 0-12 from Shane McGrath steered title holders Feakle to their second win in this season’s Clare cup when the accounted for Clooney/Quin on Saturday.

The winners held the edge throughout and led by seven points at half time when the score was 1-12 to 1-5, hitting six points in a row, the majority through the stick of McGrath.

Oisin Donnellan was the winner’s goal scorer while Clooney/Quin had their goal from Ronan O’Donnell.

Having their first outings of the campaign, Martin O’Connor, Brian Cahill and Daire Keane all impressed and played a huge part in the win.

The minimum separated the sides at half time when the visitors led on a 1-6 to 0-8 scoreline. Eight players shared in the winner’s impressive tally with Evan McNamara and Conor Tierney each scoring 0-4.

Corner forward Dara Stack was the winner’s goalscorer.

William Halpin scored the visitor’s goal and he also had a goal disallowed. In the closing minutes Tulla were awarded a 20m free but Kevin Brennan came to the home side’s rescue with a good stop on the line.

Smith O’Briens secure second win

Smith O’Briens conceded home advantage and travelled to Clarecastle for this Division 1B hurling tie which was brought forward by a week at their request and they emerged with a six point win, their second success of the campaign.

A contribution of 1-10 from Tommy Reddan steered the Killaloe side to this victory, their second of the campaign.

The winners held a two point advantage at half time when the score was 0-10 to 0-8. The game’s only goal came midway through the second half when Reddan’s long range free made it all the way to the net.
