Hundreds of children from across Clare took part in the St. Francis Credit Union Clare Community Games Annual County Athletic Finals at John O’Sullivan Park, Lees Road on Sunday June 1.

Young athletes from 26 areas competed in a packed day of track and field events, including relays, sprints, long-distance races, and throwing competitions. The finals drew large crowds of proud parents, mentors, and supporters, all cheering on the next generation of sporting talent.

The event began at 11:00am with a colourful opening parade. Each area marched behind its banner, led proudly by torch bearer Cathal O’Rourke of Ballynacally/Lissycasey. President of Clare Community Games, Cecilia O’Sullivan, welcomed all in attendance to the 54th Annual County Finals.

“I wish to extend a special welcome and thanks to our sponsors, St. Francis Credit Union, whose support allows us to bring the spirit of Community Games to every part of the county,” she said. She also welcomed Deputy Mayor of Ennis, Antoinette Baker Bashua, who praised the event as “a wonderful display of community involvement” and stayed to present medals to several winning athletes.

Chairman Rob Stephen thanked the tireless volunteers who make the event possible. “Without the dedication of volunteers at area and county level, the Community Games simply wouldn’t happen,” he said. He also expressed gratitude to St. Francis Credit Union, Clare County Council, and the caretakers at Lees Road. A minute’s silence was held in memory of those involved in Community Games who passed away in the past year.

The Community Games Pledge was read in Irish by Katie Broughton (Broadford/Kilbane/Kilmorel) and in English by Oscar Byrnes (Meelick/Coonagh), followed by a powerful rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann by Kyle Frawley (Ennis St. John’s), winner of the U16 Singing competition.

The competition was intense, with several close finishes across the events. Winners in individual track events now qualify for the National Finals in Carlow this August, while second and third place move on to the Munster Regional Finals in Clonmel. In field events, the top two athletes qualify for Carlow, as do the winners of each relay.
