CLARE’s first public dog park was officially opened in Shannon last week.
In what is the first of two parks to be developed in the Shannon Municipal District, the second amenity is expected to open in South Clare.
Elected members of the Shannon MD funded the dog park from their General Municipal Allocation this year with each councillor giving €5,000. Additional funding was also obtained from the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment under the Dog Control Support Initiative.
Situated in an urban wood at Illaunmanagh on Council owned lands, the public dog park is 0.65 of an acre, or 2,650m2 in size. The dog park provides a safe, dedicated space for dogs and their owners to enjoy recreation, exercise and community connection. The park includes ramps, tunnels and obstacles for dogs to enjoy.
Speaking at last Wednesday’s morning, Cathaoirleach of Shannon Municipal District, Cllr Michael Begley (IND), said, “I am delighted to officially open County Clare’s first public dog park. This fantastic facility represents an important investment in community wellbeing and recognises the important role that pets play in many families’ lives. The park provides a safe and enjoyable environment for dogs while creating a new social space where people can come together and as a result enhance the sense of community for dog owners”.
Senior Executive Officer at Shannon Municipal District, Suzanne Clifford, said, “This exciting development responds to growing demand from local dog owners for dedicated recreational spaces where pets can exercise safely off-leash.”
Director of Finance, Investment and Enterprise at Clare County Council, Noeleen Fitzgerald, said, “It is set to become a popular destination for local residents and visitors alike, supporting active lifestyles and promoting responsible dog ownership across Shannon and beyond”.
