Barry Cotter’s departure from Ipswich Town has been confirmed by the club.

On Monday evening, Ipswich Town confirmed that the Ennis man would not be offered a new contract at the end of the season. “The Club thanks Barry for his efforts while at Portman Road, and wishes him the very best of luck for the future,” a spokesperson for The Tractor Boys confirmed.

His contract was due to expire this summer, but the two parties have reached a mutual agreement for him to leave early. Barry is now looking for a new club.

Cotter signed for the English club in January 2018 from Limerick FC and made four appearances for Ipswich’s first team, none of which occurred this season.

In what was a memorable outing, Cotter made his debut on the same night that Mick McCarthy’s five year tenure in charge of Ipswich ended in April 2018. He was handed a start by the ex Irish boss at right back against Barnsley and his performance on that night has endeared the Clare man to club fans ever since.

Last season, the twenty two year old scored a winning penalty in their EFL Trophy penalty shootout versus Peterborough. His subsequent appearance against Lincoln would prove to be his final outing for the first team with two loan spells at Chelmsford City.

Stephen Kenny did include Barry in his U21 squad for a European qualifier with Luxembourg in March of 2019, Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher was also included in the 23 man panel along with Troy Parrott and Adam Idah. He previously lined out at U19 for his country.

Reflecting on his time with Ipswich, Barry maintained it was a “great club” with “quality people inside there”. He paid tribute to all individuals involved with the club’s academy for their guidance on and off the pitch.
