Pedestrian access at the Creamery Cross in Cooraclare is to be improved in the near future while its operation as a junction is to be reviewed.

Senior executive engineer of the West Clare Municipal District, Alan Kennelly confirmed that “some works to improve pedestrian access” would be completed at the junction on the R483 in the near future. “The operation of this junction from a traffic safety perspective may then be reviewed once these works are complete”.

It followed a motion by Cllr Cilliian Murphy (FF) appealing to the local authority to undertake an assessment of what range of low cost safety measures were available and suitable to be delivered at the Creamery Cross. A reduction of traffic speed and improved pedestrian access were referenced by the Kilkee representative as reasons to carry out the work. Cllr Bill Chambers (FF) seconded the motion.

All applications for funding for low cost safety improvement works on regional and local roads to be completed during 2021 have been submitted to the Department of Transport, Kennelly stated. “Should further works be required at this junction, it may be possible to include it as a ‘standby’ project,” he advised.

There is a possibility of obtaining funding for traffic calming measures next year as part of the Active Travel scheme, the engineer added.
