โ‚ฌ138,000 in funding is to be allocated to three separate piers in Clare for essential works.

Funding has been granted to Clare County Council for works in piers at Ballyvaughan, Bournapeaka and Carrigaholt. They come as part of an overall โ‚ฌ3.1m package for coastal local authorities to carry out improvements.

Bournapeaka Pier in Ballyvaughan has been earmarked to receive โ‚ฌ51,750 for underpinning the mid-section of the pier, removing and replacing a cracked section, the removal of a section of deck and removing and relaying a cracked stone along the pier edge.

Nearby Ballyvaughan pier has been awarded โ‚ฌ48,750 for the installation of flood gate and three flap valves, as well as the provision of rock armour to protect the pier wall.

โ‚ฌ37,500 has been allocated to Carrigaholt Pier for essential repair work and the reconstruction of a section of old pier wall.

Clare TD, Cathal Crowe (FF) has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed (FG). “As a county that is so reliant on our beautiful coastal areas, it’s essential that we maintain these historic piers.

โ€œThis will mean we will be able to put our best foot forward once the COVID-19 pandemic subsides and see these piers thronged with visitors once againโ€.
