IT LOOKS like Holy Island in Lough Derg is set to be developed as a tourist attraction sooner rather than later.

The Visitor Management and Sustainable Tourism Development Plan by Clare County Council was issued to Elected Members in the last few days, and it is planned to issue a number to the local community and stakeholders.

In reply to a motion at a recent Killaloe Municipal District Meeting, Clare County Council Director of Services Brian McCarthy said the council has met with the OPW recently to discuss the implementation of the plan.

“Given the archaeological sensitivity of the island any physical works, no matter how small, require ministerial consent,” Mr McCarthy said.

Mr McCarthy confirmed that sustainable grazing options for the island are being explored and it is hoped they will be implemented by early next year.

Futher survey work on and around the island is also required; specifically a geophysical survey; a landscape, accessibility and conservation management plan and an underwater archaeological survey

“The availability of funding is a significant issue; however the availability of an agreed Inis Cealtra (Holy Island) Visitor Management and Sustainable Tourism Development Plan is a key asset in the sourcing of any available funding,” Mr McCarthy added.
