CATHERINE CONNOLLY (IND) is on course to be elected as the tenth President of Ireland with Co Clare giving its majority vote to the Galway woman.

Tallies have been completed in Clare at 12:45pm. The team in situ managed to complete a tally of 67% of all boxes in Clare meaning it is a partial tally with figures to change but not sufficiently to alter the outcome.

Completed tallies have Catherine Connolly well ahead on 61.22%, followed by Heather Humphreys (FG) (27.05%) and Jim Gavin (FF) who withdrew from the race at the beginning of October on 11.73%.

Spoiled votes are high nationwide and also in Clare. Of the initial tally, 1517 votes were spoiled (9.6%).

For the 2018 Presidential election in Clare, the turnout was 54.7%, the figure is expected to be lower for the 2025 election.

Pressure is expected to mount on the leader of the Government parties, Micheál Martin (FF) and Simon Harris (FG) with what will be a disastrous Presidential outcome for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

Among the political figures present in Shannon for the count across Saturday were Clare TD, Donna McGettigan (SF), Mayor of Clare, Cllr Paul Murphy (FG), former local election candidate, Fiona Levie (SD), Fianna Fáil strategist Gerry Reidy, Fine Gael Director of Elections Geraldine Gregan (FG) along with party members.

With less volunteers to tally than the boxes from the Clare constituency, this has led to the partial tally.
