KILLALOE HAS BEEN put forward as the location to solve the dearth of electric vehicle charging points in East Clare.
From Ennis to Portumna and back towards Nenagh, there is not a single electric vehicle charging point to be found in East Clare. The Climate Action Plan published in June 2019 targets having 800,000 EVs in Ireland by 2030.
An update on plans to install charging points in the area was requested by Cllr Pat Hayes (FF) at the May meeting of the Killaloe Municipal District. He previously described the absence of any charging point in East Clare as “an awful indictment”. While noting the ongoing work to boost the tourism industry in East Clare, Cllr Hayes said “we need to have a plan for charging points”.
Acting senior executive officer in the Killaloe MD, Morgan Lahiffe stated that the need to install charging points has been indicated “sooner rather than later”. He confirmed that “worthwhile” locations in Killaloe have been flagged to officials in the local authority working on the Clare EV Strategy.
Reference of Killaloe prompted Cllr Tony O’Brien (FF) to appeal for a “facelift” by the end of town towards the canal, an area which used for the Farmers Market on Sundays “and needs work”.
