A YOUNG Kilkee entrepreneur is hatching a growing business in Moveen, going from two hens to a flock of 98 to keep his honesty box at the cliffs stocked.
Ubh by Paudie is a fast growing enterprise with the nine year old CEO restocking his honesty box daily at 2pm as well as managing his busy social media which currently boasts over 23,000 followers on Instagram.
“I wanted two goldfish and we got two chickens instead because my dad eats eggs every morning. You can pet the hens but you can’t pet goldfish”, the young entrepreneur explained. The idea developed into a small egg-selling business, with Paudie initially selling the eggs from his family home before setting up the egg box close to Goleen Bay in the far west of the County.
The venture began over the June Bank Holiday weekend and has been a whirlwind success ever since. On the profits he makes, Paudie demonstrates a good head for business, saying “I invest it back into the business and buy more hens”, reinvesting his earnings to expand his flock.
Running a business comes with plenty of responsibility as Paudie begins each day early to make sure that his prized hens are properly cared for.
“I get up around six in the morning. I go up and give them fresh water, fresh feed, fresh straw”, the Moveen man explained. The honesty box has become a huge hit on social media with tourists to the area from as far away as Pennsylvania adding Ubh by Paudie to their itinerary.
While social media can often be unpredictable, Paudie is confident that interest in the egg box will continue. “I know that it won’t drop off. I’m almost positive. 100%,” he said.
With the new school year fast approaching, Paudie is unfazed by the challenge of balancing his schoolwork with his daily responsibilities of looking after the hens and keeping the egg box stocked.
“My loving father will do it for me”, he jokes, confident that his budding enterprise will continue to grow over the coming months.
For now, Paudie is content to keep learning the ropes of the business one egg at a time and with his flock increasing all the time, his little enterprise could soon be getting a whole lot bigger.
