Woodstock are through to the Munster semi final of the J.B.Carr golf tournament, a team competition for senior members involving clubs from all four provinces.

On Thursday last, Woodstock travelled to Ballybunion GC to play the second leg of the Munster quarter final. The result from the first leg had Woodstock leading by 3 games to 2.

In windy, but dry conditions, the second leg was played in a very competitive but friendly atmosphere with rain threatening for most of the afternoon.

Great golf was played by both sides, on a beautiful but very tough course. Luckily for everyone, the rain abated and Woodstock prevailed after an extra hole win in match one.

The next round of the competition, also to be played over two legs will take place within the next three weeks with the Woodstock opponents being Mitchelstown from Cork.

Meanwhile last week’s open singles competition was won by David Greene (17) with 41 points. Peter Owen Cosgrove (10) who had a similar was second with Ciaran Reidy (26) in third spot, also with 41 points.

Lahinch club member Eoin Glynn (1) won the gross with 36 points. The weekly open singles continues on this Thursday.

Club member Tony Cleary (scratch) was the gross winner in the senior scratch cup at Woodstock at the weekend when Anthony Sweeney (2) won the nett, also with 72.

Frank Garrihy (11) won the intermediate scratch cup gross with 77 while Niall Reynolds (15) was the nett winner with 65.

The junior scratch cup gross winner was David McLoughlin (6) with 76 while Eddie Costelloe (8) from Ballyneety won the nett with 72.

In the competition for the minor scratch cup Paul Sherlock (18) won the gross with 86 while Ronan Lynch (29) won the nett with 63.

Lady captain Niamh O’Regan’s prize will be played for this weekend and the presentation will take place on Sunday evening at 9p.m. in Hotel Woodstock

Lahinch Golf Club:

Lahinch junior boys have secured their place in, not one, but two West Munster Area Finals. Last Friday, the Fred Daly team defeated Limerick by the narrowest of margins (3/2) in a thrilling match on the Castle Course with the final two matches being decided on the 19th and 20th holes.

They will play Killarney in the West Munster Area Final on Sunday July 23 at Ballybunion (Cashen Course).

On Tuesday, another group of the club’s junior boys came out on top of their regional qualifier at Ballyneety to book their place in the Boys Inter-Club West Munster area final. The team of five boys, with the top three scores to count, won by 10 points against the other nine competing clubs and will play Ballybunion in the final at Castletroy on Thursday July 13.

Kevin Glynn, Johnny Reynolds, Shane Carey (PGA Professional) and the Junior Boys are preparing for their respective Area Finals.

Meanwhile the Ladies Revive Active team exited the competition following defeat away to Ennis.

It’s a busy two weeks for Áine Donegan who was at Royal Dornoch in Scotland representing GB&I in the Vagliano Trophy against Europe. Following completion of the tournament Áine headed west to Pebble Beach, California for the US Women’s Open which commences on this Thursday July 6. Áine will join Leona Maguire in flying the Irish flag along the Monterey coastline

Kilrush Golf Club:

Vice-captain Tommy Downes’ prize was played for at Kilrush at the weekend when Patrick O’Dea (18) emerged as the winner with 43 points. He had two to spare over Sean Nagle (17) with Fergal O’Connor (16), also with 41 points in third spot. They were followed by Brendan Carrig (26) with 40 points and Michael Meehan (14) with 39 points.

Rory Lillis (4) won the gross with 35 points while the category winners were Tom Fox (9) with 38 points, Thomas Coffey (13) with 38 points and Brian Rogers (36) with 38 points.

Jim Young Jr (3) won the front 9 with 20 points while Richard Williams (13) won the back nine with 23 points.

Sunday’s open singles for men was won by Jack McGrath (17) with 42 points from Tony McNamara (26) with 41 points with third spot filled by Colm Fitzpatrick (18) with 39 points.

The Lady Vice captain’s (Martina Walsh) prize was played for on Saturday and resulted in victory for Ailish Lorigan (20) with 39 points and she had two to spare over Margaret Donnelly (20). Mary Nolan (18), also with 37 points was third followed by Celia O’Grady (28) with 36 points with Edel Crowley (27) in fifth spot with 36 points, one more than Kathleen Haugh (35).

The category winners were Ann Marie Donnellan (13) with 35 points, Sheena Mahony (24) with 34 points and Loretta Maher (36), also with 34 points.

In the 9 hole competition the winner was Anne McMahon with 16 points from Anne Hogan with 15 points with Margaret Griffin, also with 15 points, in third place.

Dromoland Golf Club:

Matthew Cooney won the men’s 18 hole stroke competition at Dromoland at the weekend with 65. He had one stroke to spare over Conor Barry with Patrick Marnane a stroke further back with 67 followed by Colm Sheils with 69. Brian Shally won the gross with 72.

The men’s 9 hole competition was won by Michael Lewis from Diarmuid McMahon with Stephen Bergin in third spot and all scored 21 points.

Leslie O’Flynn won the ladies 18 hole golfer of thee year stableford competition with 37 points, one more than Sheila Kent with Julie Fitzgerald in third spot on 35 points followed by Patricias Piccaslo, also with 35 points. Joan Ryan won the gross with 20 points.

Ennis Golf Club:

In the ladies June medal, an 18 hole stroke event, Patricia Moroney (18) won the silver section with 72 nett from Sinead Hegarty (19) with 77.

The bronze section was won by Mary Nagle (27) with 68 from Rose Enright (23) with 72. The overall winner of the 9 hole stableford competition was Audrey McEnery (20) with 19 points.

Division 1 was won by Monica Finnerty (12) with 18 points, Division 2 by Mary O’Halloran (16) with 17 points and Division 3 by Sarah Connolly Barnes (23) with 18 points.

Last week’s senior ladies competition was won by Bernie Brooks, Brid Cunningham and Maureen Moloney with 47.4 from Mary Gardiner, Mary Glynn, Mary Kierns and Eileen Holly with 53.4.

Meanwhile the annual open week continues at Ennis until Sunday. On this Thursday there will be a seniors fourball for ladies and men. This Friday’s competition will be a men’s and ladies fourball with a singles competition for men and ladies on Saturday while the week’s schedule of competitions will conclude on Sunday with a team of three scramble for men and ladies.

The open week competitions got underway with the mixed foursomes sponsored by Suttons Lightening. The winners with 47 points were John Keane and Carmel Cummins followed by John Cullinan and Brid Cunnigham with 41 points. In third place, also with 41 points, were Ronan Herbert and Audrey McEnery followed by Matthew Kennedy and Rose Enright with 40 points. Friday’s 9 hole singles was won by Ger Donohue with 21 points.

The Munster Group’s team of three on Saturday was won by Jason Corcoran (12) Jarlath O’Halloran (13) and Vincent Corbett (13) with 79 points, three more than Ethna Murphy (27) Noel Whealan (7) and Michael Murphy (14) with third spot filled by Andrew McGloin (10) Sinead Hegarty (18) and Mary T McMahon (21), also with 76 points

The competition on Saturday was singles, sponsored by the Old Ground hotel. The winner was John A Byrne (13) with 41 points followed by Cian O’Nolan (19) with 39 points, Lauren Fox (25) with 39 points, David Cassidy (31) with 39 points, John Gavin (20) with 39 points, Alan Ryan (24) with 39 points and Yvonne Keohane (19) with 38 points. Kieran Fox (4) won the gross with 35 points.

The competition on Sunday was a team of four, sponsored by O’Flaherty Electric. The winners with 89 points were Gerard Hannon (24), Frank Considine (12) Fergus O’Brien (14) and Phillip Brigdale (21). They were a point ahead of John C McNamara (13), Noel Normoyle (13), Flan Lyons (12) and Martin Moroney (15).

In third place, also with 88 points, were Michael Kearney (11) Steve Burns (14) Eddie Glenny (15) and Enda Burns (19) followed by Kieran Ryan (20) Senan Ryan (9) Cyril Corry (12)and David Considine (13) who also had 88 points.

The ladies team of four was won by Helen Harnett (25) Anne Pyne Gallery (26) Helen Gallery (20) and Ann A Gallery (17) with 82 points and they were five ahead of Carmel Verling (19) Brid Cunningham (20) Sinead O’Sullivan (47) and Muirel O’Meara (51).

East Clare Golf Club:

The overall winner of the ladies 18 hole stroke competition at East Clare on Sunday was Ciara Minogue (42) with a nett 65. The category winners were Siobnan Shanahan (16) with a nett 70, Helen Downey (33) with a nett 72 and Breda McCarthy (39) with a nett 39.

The winner of the men’s open on Thursday was Fiachra Donnellan with 43 points and he had three to spare over Michael Darcy.

The weekend’s men’s fourball competition was won by Tim Walsh and Chris Withycombe with 48 points from Martin Crotty and Teddy Murphy who had a similar score.

Last week’s senior men’s competition was won by Terry Coughlan, Jimmy Nagle and Martin McKeogh from Teddy O’Hanlon, Michael Heffernan and John Torpey with third place filled by Nick Obolewicz, Chris Davis and Jonathan Walsh.

The play in pink team of three ladies competition was won by Mary Farrell, Evelyn Skehan and Ciara Minogue with 70 points and they were three ahead of Noreen Doyle, Ann C. Harte and Helen Downey with third spot filled by Heather Cullen, Eileen Donnellan and Miriam Hayes with 64 points.

In the men’s competition the winners were David McNamara, Richard McLoughlin and Dominic Kiely with 75 points and they had two to spare over Pat Duggan, Teddy O Hanlon and John Duffy with Danny Minogue, Jackie McHugh and Damien O Sullivan a point further back with 72 points.

The mixed team section was won by Mary Collins, Tony McNulty and Willie Roche with 73 points. The men’s open continues on Thursdays with the mixed scramble continuing on Friday evenings at 5.45 pm.

Gort Golf Club:

Lady captain Petra O’Connor’s prize was played for at Gort on Saturday when Tracey Brennan (32) was the winner of the stroke event with 66. She had two to spare over Joan Fogarty (18) with third spot filled by Mary Fahey Coen (21) with 70 and she was followed by Shauna Burke (16) with 71, Maura Hanrahan (15) with 72, Josie Cummins (22) with 72, Marcella KIlleen (23) with 73, Anne Marie Cradock (38) with 74, Louise Butler (16) with 74 and Margaret Whelan (29 with 75.

The gross was won by Hannah McInerney (6) with 80. Other prize winners were Sara Broderick (18) with 72 (past captain), Charlotte Kelly (29) with 75 (committee member).

The category winners were Josie Collins (21) with 74, Marion Ruane (29) with 75 and Margaret McMahon (37) with 75.

The nines were won by Bernadette Burke (46) with 34 and Olive Mulcair (25) with 36.5.

In the Get Into Golf category the winner was Angela Fahey (27) with 22 points from Teresa Helebert (21) with 19 points.
The winner of the June 30 open 18 hole singles stableford was Eleanor Stafford (19) with 37 points while the previous week’s 18 hole stroke competition resulted in victory for Anne Kerins (21) with 71 in category 1. The category 2 winner was Patricia Skehill (29) with 75 while category 3 was won by Fran O Reilly (37) with 73.

Galway’s All-Ireland hurling winning midfielder Steve Mahon (24) was the winner of the men’s 18 hole stableford singles at Gort at the weekend with 43 points. The category 1 winner in the Paul Green and Co sponsored event was Tom Deveney (7) with 41 points. Niall Finnegan (1126) won category 2 with 42 points and Owen O’Donnell (28) won category 3 with 41 points.

The gross was won by David Quirke (2) with 35 points. Kaelan Higgins (23) won the Friday open singles with 40 points

Haven Arms Society:

The Haven Arms golf society’s captain’s (Geremiah Brennan) prize was played for at Kilrush golf club on Sunday.

Jack McGrath emerged as the winner with 43 points followed by Sean Lyons on 39 and Billy Clarke with a similar score.

Martin McNamara with 21 points won the front 9 while Denis Nagle, with a similar score, won the back 9. Ailish Lorigan won the ladies section with 34 points. The long drive was won by Malcolm McCarthy while nearest the pin was won by Geremiah Brennan.
