Lady Captain’s Prizes in East Clare and Kilrush were claimed by Rachel Whelan and Anne Cooper respectively taking the spoils.

East Clare Golf Club:

East Clare lady captain Maureen Clune’s prize was played for in glorious sunshine, last Sunday with large numbers taking part.

Rachel Whelan emerged as the winner with 42 points and she had one to spare over Loretto O’Donnell with Noreen O’Grady in third place with 37 points followed by Evelyn Skehan and Ursula Hogan, both also scoring 37 points. Eileen Donnellan won the gross with 22 points.

Catherine Murphy with 36 points won the past captain’s prize while Nadine Fox with 25 points and Noreen Skehan with 17 points won the front and back nines respectively. Celia Moloney won the award for nearest the pin art the 8th hole while Catherine Minogue had the longest drive on the 15th hole. The winner of the 9 hole competition was Noreen Nugent with 17 points from Mary Stritch with 14 points.

The lady captain’s prize to the men was won by Seamus Mason with 43 points from John Punch with 41 points, Ray K. McInerney with 40 points and Ben Hynes with 39 points. Ben Rittweger won the gross with 34 points. Mike Hayes with 45 points won the lady captain’s prize to the senior men from Denis Corcoran with 41 and Mike Heffernan with 39 points.

In the men’s open on Thursday Darren O’Sullivan was the winner with 38 points from Tony Fitzgerald with 35, Ben Hynes with 34, Kieran McNamara with 31 and Pa Fitzgerald with 27.

The senior men’s competition last week was won by Terry Coughlan, John Farrell and Jimmy Nagle from Ted Harrington, Ger Shortt and Richard Pomprett with third spot filled by Jim Willis, Brendn Moloney and Steve Symes.

The ladies competition on Wednesday was won by Mary Hogan, Marie A. Kelly and Helen Conway from Pauline Nugent, Breda McCarthy and Margaret Egan with third place filled by Brid Hayes, Nancy Starr and Mary Jo Minogue.

The men’s open continues on Thursdays while the mixed scramble takes place on Friday evenings from 5,30p.m. to 6.30p.m.

Lahinch Golf Club:

While the visit of a number of World ranked golf professionals resulted in a lot of activity around Lahinch Golf club over the past week, pride of place must go to the men’s and ladies senior cup teams who defeated Limerick (3.5 to 1.5) and Nenagh (3/2) respectively to qualify for the West Munster finals hosted by Killarney.

While the ladies senior cup team has had a great run of success over recent years, this will be the first Munster final appearance for the men for quite some time. On this Saturday the men’s team will line out against Dooks on Mahony’s Point golf course commencing at 7:50a.m while on Killeen golf course, the ladies will play host club, Killarney, with that match commencing at 8:10am.

On this Friday evening (July 15) the Pierce Purcell team are at home to Woodstock in the West Munster quarter-final. Their match takes place on the Castle Course commencing at 4.30pm.

Over the past week, the club welcomed some of golf’s greatest names to Lahinch. Last Friday, 9-times major champion, Gary Player, played the Old Course for the first time and spent the day and evening engaging with members and visitors, both on the golf course and around the clubhouse.

On Saturday morning, Adam Scott and his father, Phil, played the Old Course while that afternoon, Jordon Speith, Scottie Scheffler, Sam Burns and Teddy Scott enjoyed the links. Both Adam Scott and Jordon Spieth indicating their intentions to return some day with Jordon ranking the Old Course within his Top 5.

Meanwhile preparations are well advanced for the hosting of the South of Ireland Amateur open championship which is just over one week away.

Woodstock Golf Club:

Lady Captain Mary McNamara’s prize was payed for at Woodstock at the weekend and the winner of the 18 hole stroke competition was Mags Nash with 66 nett. Eilis Neville was second with 70 nett followed by Aine Burke with a similar score Niamh O’Regan was fourth with 73 nett followed by Mary Howard with 75 nett.

Fran Feighery won the past captain’s prize while the nines were won by Marianne McGough and Chaye Kelly. Mary Howard won nearest the pin at the 6th hole while the long drive winners were Marie McNamara (2nd hole|) and Chaye Kelly (9th hole). Ann White, lady captain at Ennis, won the guest’s prize. In the 9 hole competition Anne Kilker won with 21 points from Breda Hansbury with 20 points.

The lady captain’s prize to the men was won by Jim Dunne (20) with 67 from Vincent McInerney (21) with a similar score. Derek Deegan (16) was third with 68 followed by Niall Reynolds (15) with 68. Brian Gilligan (3) won the gross with 71.

The category winners were Cathal O’Connor (3) with 72, Tony Nugent (6) with 70, Ollie McNamara (16) with 70 and Brian Kilker (21) with 68. The open singles continues on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Last week’s open singles at Woodstock was won by David Forde (20) with 47 points. He had four to spare over Paul Warren (21) with third spot filled by Donagh Stack (19) who scored 42 points. Colin Ryan (9) won the gross with 41 points.

Ennis Golf Club:

Last week’s 18 hole stroke July medal competition for ladies at Ennis resulted in victory for Patricia Moroney (20) in the silver medal section with 72 nett from Mary Lenihan (18) with 78. Monica Finnerty (24) won the bronze medal section with 68 from Betty O’Reilly (36) wth 72 nett.

In the 9 hole competition the overall winner was Ann Casey (14) with 20 points while the categories were won by Mary Nagle (13) with 19 points, Mary Walshe (17) with 19 points and Bernie Brooks (20) with 30 points.

Last week’s senor ladies competition was won by Ann White, Ann Casey and Kathleen Pyne with 49.3 points from Claire Kennelly, Bernie Brooks and Claire Pyne who had 51 points.

Kilrush Golf Club:

The lady captain’s (Peggy Mulqueen) prize was played for at Kilrush at the weekend and resulted in victory for Anne Cooper (35) with 69. Ailish Lorigan (19) with a similar score was second followed by Mary O’Sullivan (27) with 70, Muriel Kiely (31) with 71, Martina Walsh (23) with 72, and Joan O’Malley (19) with 73. Mary Nolan (20) won the front nine with 34 while the back nine was won by Mary Keating (32) with 35.

The 9 hole competition was won by Stephanie Roughan with 18 points from Geraldine Burke with 16 points and Mary McCarthy with 14 points,

Seamus O’Doherty (15) with 43 points won the lady captain’s prize to the men from Brendan Carrig (29) with 40 points with third spot filled by Matt Fitzzpatrick (23) with 39 points.. The category winners were Thomas Mullins (9) with 37 points, Fergal S. Crowley (15) with 39 points and Bernard Coleman (19) with 39 points while Cyril Kelly (18) won the front nine with 22 points with Bill O’Reilly winning the back nine with a similar score.

The weekly ladies competition was for the Mary Gleeson prize was won by Edel Crowley (42) with 42 points.

Mary Bolton (18) was second with 36 points followed by Miriam Saunders (29) with 35 points. The category winners were Fiona Kinsella (14) with 34 points, Ann Coen (21) with 34 points and Mary Keating (32) with 34 points while the 12 hole winner was Geraldine Burke with 19 points.

Dromoland Golf Club:

Enda Finnucane won the men’s singles stableford 18 hole competition at Dromoland at the weekend with 46 points. He had three to spare over Noel Stapleton with P.J Conway in third spot with 42 points followed by Shane O’Doherty with 41. Brian Arthur won the gross with 32 points.

The ladies 18 hole strokeplay competition was won by Mairead Toomey with 65 nett from Mairead Bergin with 75.

Gort Golf Club:

Brendan McDonagh’s captain’s prize was played for at Gort at the weekend and resulted in victory for Cyril Doherty (26) with 95. John Williams (17) was second with 101 followed by Martin Flaherty (19) with 102, Tony Curran (13) with 103 and Noel Forde (20) with 103.

Robert McDonagh (3) won the gross with 75. Other prize winners were Michael Ryan (25) with 64, Ronnie Killeen (30) with 65 (past captain), Owen O’Donnell (28) with 65 (senior), Tom Devxeney (9) 34(best 9 hole play off), David Burke (longest drive), Niall Loftsus (nearest the pin).

The captain’s prize to the ladies was won by Ann Joran (20) with 42 points from Marcella Killeen (25) with 40 points with third spot filled by Ena Furey (32) with 39 points. Hannah McInerney (10) won the gross with 28 points.

Lady captain Bernie Browne’s prize was played for last week and resulted in victory for Maureen Brennan (25) with 68 from Marion Ruane (29) who had a similar score Ann Jordan (20) was third with 70 followed by Bridie Fahy (47) with 63. Margaret Whelan (29) was fifth with 71 followed by Joan Fogarty (18) with a similar score.

Siobhan Forde (11) won the gross with 83 while the past captain’s prize was won by Jane Joyce (15) with 71. Marcella Killeen (25) won the committee member’s prize.

The category winners were Josie Collins (19) with 73, Geraldine Connors (22) with 72, Tracey Brennan (34) with 74 and Bernadette Burke (46) with 81.

Regina Malone and Patricia Skehill won the nines while Siobhan O’Connor was nearest the pin with Hannah McInerney winning the long drive.

Sixmilebridge society:

The Sixmilebridge golf society’s President’s (Ian Mulready) prize wilo be payed for on this Saturday July 16 at East Clare Golf Club. The tee is reserved from 10.30am and as usual only those pre-booked can attend on the day. Contact the committee for details.
