IT’S hard to believe Ennis has changed so much in just 70 years.

Folklore.ie is an archive centered on the folklore collection work of Michael Fortune and features living superstitions, beliefs and customs from Ireland.

Michael posted some footage of Ennis, originally filmed by British Pathé in 1949.

Thatched cottages without running water were still a common feature in the town, but the dawn of Shannon Airport would soon change all that.

“The talk of the town is about the cars which disturb the peace and quiet of the country lanes. A few years ago, people could remember a time when a car was a sight to see,” the narrator states.

Car models which “even Dublin was yet to see” brought passengers and crew from Shannon Airport to stay in Ennis, building a novel tourist trade in the town.
