THE Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) is urging people to donate blood after warm weather and the summer holiday season led to a decline in donations.
While many people are enjoying the sunshine or preparing to head away, hospitals continue to require blood every day for patients undergoing surgery, cancer treatment, childbirth and emergency care.
The IBTS is encouraging eligible donors to make an appointment in the coming days, particularly if they are planning to travel.
Alex O’Connor, Donor Recruitment Executive with the IBTS, said the need for blood remains constant despite seasonal changes.
“Warm weather and the holiday season traditionally lead to a decline in donations, but the need for blood never takes a holiday,” he said.
“Every donation can help save and improve the lives of patients who depend on blood transfusions.”
The IBTS is encouraging both existing and first-time donors to attend its upcoming clinic at the Oakwood Arms Hotel, Shannon, on Wednesday, August 5 and Thursday, August 6, from 4pm to 7.20pm.
Regular donors are being encouraged to donate before heading away on holidays, while new donors are also welcome.
