TOONAGH RESIDENTS have labelled a derelict piece of ground in their estate as โ€œa jungleโ€.

Engagement is to commence between the Rural and Community Development Officer of the Ennis Municipal District and residents of Beechgrove Estate in Toonagh which has sixteen houses.

It follows a proposal by Cllr Johnny Flynn (FG) for liaisons to begin in order to prepare a plan for the derelict site at the end of the estate which had formerly been an amenity space. โ€œThe residents understand this ground was ear-marked for a play area. Clare County Council erected swings there around 1980 which were used for years,โ€ he recalled.

Administrative officer in the Rural Development Directorate, Siobhรกn Oโ€™Reilly explained that the site was not in the ownership of Clare County Council. She said the Rural and Community Development Officer would discuss with residents their plans and advise on possible funding sources.

Speaking at a recent sitting of the Ennis Municipal District, Cllr Flynn acknowledged that โ€œa number of green areasโ€ had already been maintained by residents who are โ€œanxiousโ€ to engage with the local authority. The piece of ground were the swings were located was now in โ€œa state of disrepair, in fact residents call it a jungle and it is in need of a revampโ€. He encouraged the Ennis MD to play a part in revitalising the section. The proposal was seconded by Cllr Mary Howard (FG).
