After many years of close calls, Shannon Golf Club won their first Jimmy Bruen shield West Munster pennant in 20 years on Sunday at Limerick golf club.
Shannon defeated Kenmare in the final after overcoming Woodstock and Limerick on Saturday, and Killarney on Sunday morning. A strong dedicated panel built over the last few years was led by an experienced management team of Chris Willets, Derek Sweeney and Murty O’Donoghue.
Shannon will take on Gowran in the All-Ireland quarter final at Doneraile on September 3.
Meanwhile Lahinch, Ennis and Woodstock golf clubs hosted their captains’ prizes at the weekend and all attracted huge entries.
The format in each club included 9 hole play offs on Sunday evening. Kevin Power, Gerry Bredin and Paul Coote emerged as the respective winners after some very keen competition and impressive scoring
Lahinch Golf Club:
There was a huge entry of 424 members competing in Kevin Molony’s captain’s prize qualifying rounds on Friday and Saturday at Lahinch.
Those playing on Saturday has to contend with very windy conditions, but despite this the scoring over both days was excellent and the leading 27 golfers qualified for the playoff on Sunday afternoon when Kevin Power emerged as the worthy winner by one point from Patrick Burke Jnr.
On Saturday, 57 seniors competed for the Francis Garrahy Perpetual Plate on the Castle Course when Brian Coughlan came out on top to win by two points from Christy Killeen.
At the captain’s dinner on Sunday evening the prizegiving took place.
The prizewinners were, Winner: Kevin Power (7) 63 points; Runner Up: Patrick Burke jnr (10) 62 points (Last 9); 3rd: Brian O’Friel (10) 62 points; 4th: Ian Morrison (3) 61 points; 5: Andrew Callinan (19) 59 points; 6th: Domhnall O’Mahony (6) 59 points; 7th: Pat Duggan (13) 59 points; 8th: Aidan Feore (25) 57 points; 9th: Eoin Glynn (2) 56 points; 10th: Jerry Keohane (14) 56 points.

Over 50 junior golfers participated in the putting competition last Wednesday evening when Mickie McMahon retained the title.
Ennis Golf Club:
Captain Peter Quinn’s prize was played for at Ennis on Saturday and Sunday and attracted a big entry of 252 members with the leading players returning on Sunday evening for a 9 hole play off.
Gerry Bredin emerged as the overall winner with 102 nett from Cathal O’Gorman who had a similar score with Ronan Herbert in third place, also with 102 nett. The gross was won by Martin O’Neill with 114 from Conor Malone with 119.
Fourth place was filled by Pat Murphy with 104.5. the leading qualifier was Niall Townsend with 66 nett. The category winners were Darragh Murphy with 109, Shane Cosgrove with 111 and Tola Coote with 108.
Michael Nealon won the past captain’s prize with 110.5 while Liam McCannbon won the senior section with 112.5. The guests section was won by David Rushe with 111.5. The junior section was won by Frankie Meaney with 72 nett.
The 9 hole winner was Tony Kehoe with 16 points while Jamesie O’Connor won the putting competition.
The captain’s prize to the ladies was won by Bridie Keane with 65 nett from Helen Gallery with 66 nett with Flor Coffey in third place with 68 while Ann O’Loughlin won the gross with 87.
Friday’s open singles was won by Ann A. Gallery (19) wwith 42 points. Owen Doyle was second with 40 points and Gearoid Barry was third with 39 points.
The ladies Gaiety cup foursomes at Ennis was won by Kate Keohane and Peig Hanrahan (19) with 36 points from Geraldine 0’Rourke and Rose Enright (29) with a similar score. In third place with 30 points were Helen Hartnett and Ann Pyne Gallery (30).
In the 9 hole competition the overall winner was Bernie Brooks (22) with 16 points. Division 2 was won by Mary Leahy (16) with 15 points while division 3 was won by Sarah Connolly Barnes (23) with 15 points.
Last week’s senior ladies competition was won by Mary Murray, Liz Kelly and Mary McMahon with 54 from Maeve O‘Grady, Loretto Torpey and Jean Moloney with 56.1.
Woodstock Golf Club:
Paul Coote (14) won captain Aidan Mulcahy’s prize at Woodstock at the weekend. The leading qualifiers played a 9 hole play off on Sunday evening and Paul returned an impressive 99 for the 27 holes. He had three to spare over Ronan Kilroy (10) while third placed Dickie Pyne (17) and fourth placed Sean Crowe (9) also finished with 102. Ross Kenny (+2) won the gross which was over 18 holes with 71.
The category winners were Justin McGrath (8) with 106, Cathal Nagle (11) with 104 and Ronan Lynch (26) with 110. The past captain’s prize was won by Kieran Dromey (11) with 74 (18 holes), Pat Barry (17) with 109 won the senior’s section while the junior prize was won by Conor Coffey with 43 points for 18 holes.
Last week’s open singles was won by Neilius Butler (19) with 40 points from Ronan Horgan (12) with a similar score. John Baker (23), also with 40 points was third. Brian Gilligan (scratch) won the gross with 35 points.
The open singles continues on this Thursday while the weekend’s competition will be the Michael Cullinan memorial trophy and this is a golfer of the year event.
Captain Aidan Mulcahy’s prize to the ladies at Woodstock was won by Hannah O’Brien (31) with 39 points and she had two to spare over Mary Howard (30) with third spot filled by Fran Feighery (27) with 33 points. The nines were won by Eilis Neville with 14 points and Niamh O’Regan with 16 points while the 9 hole competition winner was Hilary Hannon with 13 points.
East Clare Golf Club:
The ladies open team of 3 played over the Bank holiday weekend at East Clare was won by Eileen Donnellan, Noreen Doyle and Helen Downey with 60 points from Brid Hayes, Helen Ahern and Helen Downey with a similar score.
The winners of the Wednesday competition were Joan Kinsella, Mary Jo. Minogue and Brid Hayes.
The men’s fourball at the weekend was won by Seamus Cawley and Brian Stritch with 49 points from Danny Minogue and Darren O Sullivan with 46 points.
Brendan McInerney won the men’s singles competition with 40 points from Colm Kelly with 39 while the men’s open team of 3 winners were John Fahy, Enda Quinlan and Adam O’Halloran with 100 points.
Last week’s senior men’s competition was won by Michael Moloney, Noel Earley and Paddy O Brien from Kevin Wallis, Martin McHugh and Ted Harrington with third place filled by Brendan Moloney, Sean Jones and Martin Kelly.

Connie Corry (20) was the winner of the Special Voucher at Shannon last week with 71 nett. She had one stroke to spare over Honor Kinahan (35). the gross was won by Michelle Pyke (8) with 83 while the category winners were Margaret Hope (19) with 72 nett, Sandra Ferguson (24) with 76 nett and Maire O’Donnell (41), also with 73 nett,
The ladies 9 hole stableford competition for July was won by Bridget McCaul (14) with 21 points from Dee O’Connell (26) with a similar score.
In third place was Sue Corcoran (24) with 19 points followed by Maire McMahon (16) with a similar score while Marlyn Kelly (25) was fifth with 18 points
Mary Fitzgibbon (19) won the FAB ladies 9 hole comptition with 19 points.
Dromoland Golf Club:
The weekend men’s singles stableford competition at Dromoland was won by Mike Tobin with 42 points from Brian Maloney with 41, Niall O’Connor with 40 points and Patrick Vaughan. Sean Burns won the gross with 38 points.
The mid week 9 hole competition was won by Gordon Daffy with 21 points from Daniel Lennon with a similar score with Sean Hayes in third spot with 20 points.
Kilrush Golf Club:
John Stapleton (22) won the SuperValu men’s singles stableford competition at Kilrush on Sunday with 40 points. A countback was needed to separate the top three each of whom had 40 points. Michael Studdert (22) was second with third spot filled by Sean Finucane (23).
The category winners were Jim Young Jnr (5) with 36 points, Thomas Coffey (13) with 39 points and Finbar McMahon (22) with 36 points.
JeanLuc Bellevergue (18) won the front nine with 20 points while the winner of the back 9 was Bertie Reynolds (14) from Ballyneety with 21 points.
Saturday’s SuperValu men’s singles stroke competition was won by Pat J Shannon (12) with 69 from Patrick Coleman (15) with 71 with third place filled by David Keane (10) and he also had 71. Donnacda Nagle (5) won the gross with 79.
Friday’s SuperValu mixed scotch foursomes was won by Sheena Mahony and Michael J Hogan (23) with 63 and they had a shot to spare over Pascal Looney and Mary Bolton (17). In third place, also with 64 were Cathal Meaney and Mary Downes (27) while the gross was won by Paddy Coghlan and Anne Brennan with 80.
The SuperValu ladies’ stableford competition was won by Marion Brennan (27) with 36 points from Marie Costelloe (Rathbane) (24) with 34 points. They were followed by Anne Gallagher (10) with 33 points with fourth place filled by Mary Nolan (18), also with 33 points. The category winners were Geraldine Burke (15) with 31 points, Martina Walsh (24), also with 31 points and Mary Downes (31) with 28 points. The 12 hole winner was Marie Kearns with 24 points
Supporting Chernobyl Project:
The Castle course in Lahinch will host a team of three (any combination) competition on this Saturday (August 13) with funds raised going to the Ennistymon Chernobyl Project. The format will be one to score with two scores to count at all par 3’s. The fee is €60 per team and entries will be taken in the shop
Gort Golf Club:
Kevin Roche (26) was the winner of the men’s singles stableford competition at Gort last weekend, sponsored by P and M golf Superstore Ennis, with a score of 42 points.
The category winners were Sean Hansbury (12) with 38 points, David McAllen (15) with 39 points and John Walsh (26), also with 39 points. David Quirke (2) won the gross with 33 points.
The open team of three (any combination) on Thurday and Friday, sponsored by Gort Credit Union was won by Noel O Shaughnessy, Paul Smith and Noel Murphy with 84 points. In second place with a similar score were Hannah McInerney, Josie Cummins and Louise Butler and they were followed by Brian Monaghan, Pat Corcoran and Aaron Gilchrist with 79 points.
In the over 50’s 18 hole singles on Wednesday, sponsored by the Burren Inn, Tubber, the winner was Tom Casey (48) with 42 points. The category winners were Stephen Dervan (16) with 41 points, John G Ryan (20) with 37 points and Don Coen (35) with 41 points. The gross was won by Joe Byrne (12) with 26 points.
In the 18 hole singles sponsored by Ronan Higgins PGA, Golfstation.ie Ardrahan the winner was Kris Finnegan (4) with 39 points while the category winners were Joe Moran (4) with 36 points, Stephen Dervan (16) with 35 points and Denis O Dea (25) with 35 points. Brian McCarthy (6) from Limerick golf club won the gross with 27 points.
The Ward and Burke sponsored ladies singles stableford competition was won by Anne Kerins (21) with 35 points from Mairead Bergin (13) Dromoland golf club with 30 points.
In the 18 hole open singles sponsored by Golf Style, Galway the winner was Hannah McInerney (7) with 40 points from Marcella Killeen (23) with 37 points while the gross was won by Siobhan O Connor (11)with 17 points.
Wednesday’s open seniors competition, sponsored by Gort Post Office. The winner was Anne Kerins (21) with 35 points from Teresa Helebert (43) with a similar score. Maura Hanrahan (15) won the gross with 18 points.
The Bank holiday weekend open singles sponsored by O’Leary Insurance, Galway, was won by Patricia Skehill (28) with 34 points from Bernie Diskin (19) with 33 points with third place filled by Sinead O’Connor (36) with 32 points, The gross was won by Hannah McInerney (6) with 22 points.
Sinead O’Connor (35) won the August Bank holiday Monday competition with 40 points from Teresa Helebert (4) with 38 points with Florence Coffey (23) from Ennis in third place with 37 points. Jane Joyce (17) won the gross with 18 points.
