Shannon will represent Clare in the JB Carr (seniors) competition this year having secured victory over Woodstock in the Clare final on Wednesday last.
Trailing 2-3 after the first leg in Shannon, the Woodstock team needed victory last week on their home course and they achieved that emerging with a 3-2 win and this tied up the final at 5-5
This led to a play off where Shannon won on the 20th their pairing of John Collins and William O’Brien overcoming the Woodstock pairing of Declan Coote and Sean Williams.
The other Shannon pairings on the day were Ger O’Halloran and Pat Hickey; Jody O’Connor and Adrian Treacy; Sean Bourke and Joe McGrath; Fergie Coughlan and Alan Fitzgerald.
The remaining Woodstock pairings were Paddy Meehan and Tony Coote; Paul Coote and Oliver McNamara; Joe Keane and Tommy Flynn; John O’Connor and Sean Howard.
Thunder and a downpour led to the suspension of play for a period during Wednesday’s game.
East Clare Golf Club:
There was a huge turnout for captain T.J. McNamara’s prize at the weekend at East Clare golf club.
T.J’s prize to the ladies was played for on Sunday and was won by
Maureen Clune (33) with 41 points, one ahead of Deirdre Tuohy (35) with third place filled by Maria Kennedy (29) with 38 points. The gross was won by Siobhan Shanahan (15) with 20.
Winner of the captain’s prize to the men was Ray McInerney from Paul Hayes with Teddy O’Hanlon in third place. The gross was won by Jack Whelan while the past captain’s prize was won by Brendan Magill.
The category winners were Finn Looney, Brian Stritch and Michael Hayes.
Pat Fitzgerald won the captain’s prize to the senior men from Ger Hogan with Jerry O’ Brien in third place. Mike Whelan won the gross.
Conor O’Brien won the nearest the pin prize while the long drive winner was Sean McCarthy.
Paul Skelly won the junior’s prize with the gross won by Cathal Rochford.
Winners of the ladies Wednesday’s competition were Breda Reid, Brid Hayes and Kay Grimes from Mary Hogan, Mary Farrell, Pauline Nugent and Breda McCarthy with third place filled by Evelyn Skehan, Siobhan Mulcahy and Ann O’ Grady.
Last week’s senior men’s competition winners were Nick Obolewicz, Colm Kelly and Brendan Moloney from Jim Willis, John Nihill and Jackie McHugh with third place filled by Brian Corry, Tadhg Murphy and Jim Bradley.
Dromoland Golf Club:
It was captain Seamus Cusack’s prize weekend at Dromoland when huge numbers played across the men’s, ladies and junior sections.
In the ladies section Deirdre Cooney was the winner with 69 nett and she won on a countback from Michelle McCarthy.
In third place with 70 nett was Siobhan Dyar followed on 71 by Julie Fitzgerald with fifth place filled by Siobhan Fitzpatrick with 72.
The gross was won by Mairéad Toomey while the nines were won by
Mary Arthur and Mary O’Donnell.
Nearest the Pin was Mairéad Bergin while Siobhan Fitzpatrick and Linda Kochhar had the longest drives.
The men’s competition which included a 9 hole play off for the leading qualifiers on Sunday evening, was won by Aodhan Wynne with 104 and he won on a countback from Patrick McCoy with third place filled by Niall Geraghty on 105. They were followed by Ivan Kerins on 106, Alan O’Flanagan on 107, Michael Lally on 109, John Casey on 109, Daire Kelly on 110 and Paul English on 110.
Ross Kenny with 73 won the gross while the category for handicappers 20 and over was won by Damien Lafferty with 72. The nines were won by Tom Spellissey and Alfie Jones.
Bo Murphy won the junior category with 76 while the student winner was Dylan O’Brien with 75.
The past captain’s category was won by Niall Cannon with 72 while the guests section was won by Barry O’Connor with 36 points from Eamonn Healy with 33 points.
Wednesday’s ladies 18 hole stableford competition was won by Deirdre Cooney with 36 points with Siobhan Doohan second with 33 points.
Shannon Golf Club:
Club professional Artie Pyke’s prize was played for at Shannon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday when Eoghan O’Dea (10) emerged as the winner with 68. He won on a countback from Paul O’Connor (9) with Conor McMahon (13) in third place with 69.
They were followed by Thomas Nelson (15) with 69, Paul O’Brien (8) with 69 and Bob McInerney (15) also with 69. John Donlon (+2) won the gross with 70.
Category A was won by Darragh Lohan (4) with 70 from Chris Willetts (3) with 70.
John Garry (10) won category B with 69 from Damian Collopy (14) with 70 while category C was won by David Lenihan (18) with 71 from Liam Coughlan (18) with 72.
The men’s open singles on Wednesday was won by Seamus Hanley (12) with 36 points from Paul McElligott (15) with a similar score. Eoghan O’Dea (10) was third with 35 points.
Last week’s men’s green tee challenge was won by Philip Purcell (6) with 40 points from Jamie O’Gorman (7) with a similar score. The gross was won by Jason O’Donnell (scratch) with 36 points.
The ladies Granard Cup competition, a fourball betterball event, was won by Joan Hoctor (19) and Honor Kinihan (24) with 44 points and they had five to spare over Connie Corry (18) and Linda Boland (18) 39.
Woodstock Golf Club:
Dates for Woodstock’s three major competitions have been confirmed. The President’s (Mary McNamara) prize will be played for on the weekend of July 4/5, the lady captain’s (Margaret Nash) prize will be played for on July 11 and 12 while club captain Pat Barry’s prize will be played for on July 31, August 1 and 2.
The bronze winner in the ladies May medal competition was Siobhan Maher with 73 nett.
The ladies Revive Active team defeated Lahinch on a score of 3.5 to 1.5 at the weekend.
In last week’s AMR open singles the overall winner who also captured category 3 honours was William De Oliveira (28) with 42 points.
Category 1 was won by Barry Scanlan (10) with 41 points with category 2 honours going to P.J Carmody (12) with 38 points.
In the 2’s competition Declan Reidy was a winner at the 11th and 14th. Thirty played in the competition.
Woodstock suffered defeat from Shannon in the Barton shield at the weekend.
Entries are being taken for the 2026 Donal Kenny scratch matchplay which is open to those within handicap range + to 9 (8.2 index and below).
The weekend’s club singles, part of the Woodstock Masters Order of Merit sponsored by Breen Building Design Ltd was won by Donnacha Dunne (17) with 46 points while Aidan Mulcahy (8) won the gross with 36 points.
Category 1 was won by Joe Barry (8) with 36 points with second place filled by Kieran Cosgrove (7) with 35 points.
Category 2 was won by Liam O’Connor (15) with 40 points and he won on a countback from John McGrath (13).
James Gorman (21) won category 3 with 38 points. In the 2’s competition winners were Cormac Walsh (4th hole), Barry McNamara (4th hole) and Paul Sherlock (11th hole). The competition attracted 102 entries.
Winners of the Chapman / Pinehurst modified team of 2 competition were Ollie McNamara and Vinny McInerney with 71. This week’s seniors outing was won by Pat Barry, Michael Foley and Willie Thompson with 80 points.
The open singles continues on this Thursday while the weekend competition will be the Western Joinery June medal.
Ennis Golf Club:
The committee trophy, a golfer of the year singles stableford competition at Ennis was won by John Murphy (25) with 40 points and he won on a countback from Andrew Turner (15) with third place filled by Ross McLoughlin (22) with 37 points followed by Paul O’Leary (28), also with 37 points. The gross was won by Alan Butler with 35 points.
The category winners were Enda Heaney (11) with 38 points, Cyril Corry (16) with 36 points, Joe Carmody (19) with 38 points and Kieran Ryan (25) also with 38 points.
Last week’s senior ladies competition was a 14 hole scramble which was won by Brid Cunningham, Mary Glynn and Marie Connolly with 46.55. In second place with 48.50 were Carmel Verling, Margaret Flanagan and Eileen Daly followed by Kathleen Frehill, Mary Murrary and Maureen Moloney with 54.67.
The 9 hole scramble was won by Jacinta Nicholas, Pat Lacey and Gerte Finn with 33.67 from Geraldine O’Mahony, Mary Kearns, Mary Gardiner and Ada McMahon with 37.90 with third spot filled by Jean Moloney, Alice Darcy and Bernie Brooks with 40.8.
The ladies 18 hole scotch foursomes Australian Spoons qualifier was won by Ann A Gallery and Helen Gallery (19) with 45 points. They were three ahead of Maureen Lynch and Ethna Murphy (34) with 42 points followed by Peg Hanrahan and Nuala Corry (21) also with 42 points.
Ann and Helen along with Peg and Nuala who had the best gross will represent Ennis in the Munster West final which will be held in Ennis on August 11.
The overall winner in last week’s ladies 9 hole competition was Breege Hamel (28) with 20 points. The category winners were Carmel Verling (12) with 18 points, Ceilie Reilly (19) with 16 points and Norah Power (26) with 20 points.
The senior men’s Teresa Howard memorial 18 hole stableford competition was won by Padraig Cusack (16) with 40 points from Pat McInerney (18) with 39 points with third place filled by Brian Logue (18), also with 39 points.
Ger Donohue (17) with 40 points won the Martin Ward sponsored Friday open singles. Second place was filled by John A. Byrne (13) with 38 points followed by Michael Moroney (15) with 36 points
The club’s mixed foursomes team lost to Shannon at Shannon on a score of 3 matches to 1.
Gort Golf Club:
Friday’s open singles at Gort was won by George Cavill (39) with 41 points while Kris Finnegan (0) with 34 points won the gross.
The weekend open singles, sponsored by Quinns Pharmacy Gort was won by Brendan Hanniffy (16) with 40 points while Joe Moran (0) won the gross with 34 points.
The category winners were Derek Kinsella (12) with 39 points, Martin Joyce (15) with 38 points and Brian Crossan (21) with 39 points.
Monday’s open singles was won by Niall Loftus (8) with 40 points.
Last week’s ladies 18 hole stableford competition sponsored by Gran Gran, Kilcolgan saw Shauna Burke (15) win category 1 with 42 points. Category 2 was won by Fran O Reilly (32) with 44 points while category 3 was won by Angela Fahey (39) with 37 points.
Friday’s open singles was won by Nora Lee (36) (Correstown G C.) with 29 points.
The winners of the Australian Spoons competition were Louise Butler and Shauna Burke (11) with 43 points while the gross was won by Hannah McInerney and Siobhan Forde (8) with 34 points gross.
The May 9 hole stableford competition was won by Anne O’Connor (28) with 22 points from Ann Jordan (9) with 19 points.
In the Bob Forde Cup an 18 hole stroke medal sponsored by George Fahey Construction the winner was Sinead O Connor (22) with 70 from Mary Kelly (24) with a similar score. Third place was filled by Ena Furey (25) with 71 while the gross was won by Ella Cantwell with 69.
Kilrush Golf Club:
The Bowman’s Lane ladies 18 hole stableford competition at Kilrush on Tuesday was won by Mary O’Neill (43) with 41 points. Geraldine Burke (18) with 40 points won category 1 from Edel Crowley (18) with 38 points.
Category 2 was won by Joan O’Malley (25) with 39 points with second place going to Mary McCarthy (29) with 36 points. Carmel O’Flaherty (45) won category 3 with 39 points and she was three ahead of Jean Lorigan (36).
