Captain Brian Lonergan’s prize was played for at Shannon at the weekend when there was a huge entry.
The winner was Sean Óg Murnane (3) with 68 and he won by one stroke from Kieran Kirby (13). P.J. Moroney (7) was third with 70 followed by John Garry (9) with a similar score. Shane Flynn (6) was next with 71 followed by Dermot Hogan (12), also with 71. Jamie O’Shea (2) won the gross with 72.
Neil O’Brien (8) won category 1 with 71 from Bryan Power (3) also with 71. Ian O’Neill (9) was the winner of category B with 71 from Eoghan Hanley (15) with 72. Category 3 was won by Patrick Corcoran (18) with 74 from Derek Malone (25) with 75.
Kevin Stanford (6) won the past captain’s category with 74. The guests section was won by Conor McDonnell (10) with 32 points while the junior winner was Shane Moloney (18) with 70.
Anna Keely won the ladies section with 23 points from Honor Kinahan with a similar score. Martina Cunningham was third with 21 points followed by Marie O’Donnell with 20 points.
Wednesday’s men’s open singles winner was David O’Brien (14) with 38 points from David Ryan (8) with 37 points. Robbie Corry (5) was third, also with 37 points while the gross was won by Damian Casey (+1) with 35 points.
Last week’s men’s green tee challenge winner was Fintan Ward (12) with 39 points.
The ladies June medal at Shannon was won by Sylvia O’Brien (36) with 67 nett. She was one stroke ahead of Lucy Twomey (31) with Lynda Quinn (17) in third place with 72 followed by Pauline Nally (19) with 73.
Michelle Pyke (7) won the gross with 86. Winners in the 2’s competition were Michelle Pyke (4th) and Suzanne McMahon (17th).
Shannon ladies junior cup team advanced to the semi-finals with victory over Ballyneety and Limerick in Shannon on Sunday.
The members of the team are Laura O’ Brien, Michelle Pyke, Jean Murphy, Aine Twomey and Madge Young.
Team manager is Laura O’Brien and Jane Kennedy stood in for her on the Sunday. Shannon will play Nenagh in the next round on July 5 at Castletroy.
Lahinch Golf Club:
News of the death of Robert McCavery, Seapark, Lahinch, cast a dark shadow across Lahinch golf club this week.
The McCavery family have a long connection with Lahinch Golf Club dating back to 1927 when Robert’s father, Bill, was appointed club professional. Robert joined his father as his assistant in 1959, an era when visitors were thin on the ground but club repair and club-making, which he learned from his father, was all part of a day’s work.
They made woods by the batch but with the advent of today’s factory-made golf clubs, club-making became a thing of the past but Robert continued to make wooden shafted putters which are still on sale at the golf shop to this day.
As his father’s assistant, Robert played golf with many overseas visitors.
Robert took over as club professional in 1977. Robert catered for the needs of members and visitors at the golf shop including welcoming many famous golfers and celebrities to Lahinch before retiring in 2013, after 54 years of unblemished and dedicated service to the club.
Robert was made an honorary life member in 2014 and continued to visit the club on a regular basis following his retirement.
Robert lay in repose at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Lahinch on Tuesday and following requim Mass on Wednesday he was laid to rest in Kilmacreehy Cemetery.
Kilrush Golf Club:
The Med Pharma and West Clare trophies open singles at Kilrush was won by Andrew Young (8) with 4 up. He won by one from John McNeilis (19) with 3 up with third place filled by Gerard Hehir (20) with 2 up. The gross was won by Jack Foley.
Spanish Point Golf Club:
Spanish Point captain Tom Hehir’s prize to the ladies was played for at the weekend when Eimear Johnston won with 36 points from Noelle O’Connor with 34 points with third place filled by Bernie Kelleher with 33 points. Fiona O’Boyle won the gross with 23 points.
Ennis Golf Club:
Andrew McGloin (11) with 40 points won last week’s singles stableford competition at Ennis. He had one to spare over Gerry Bredin (20). The gross was won by Niall Hannon with 32 points.
Last week’s senior ladies 14 hole competition was won by Carmel Verling, Mary Kearns and Marie Connolly with 50 and they had one to spare over Kathlen Pyne, Martina Corbett and Mary Murray.
The ladies 9 hole competition was won by Jean Moloney from Anne McMahon with third place filled by Pat Lacey.
The ladies weekly competition was an 18 hole v par for the Bogey cup, sponsored by Coco Restaurant. The winner was Phil Butler (32) with +4 from Attracta Williams (33) with +3. The gross was won by lady captain Mary T. McMahon (13) with -9.
In the 9 hole singles stableford the overall winner was Dympna Hehir (23) with 23 points while the category winners were Carmel Verling (12) with 18 points, Mary O’Halloran (19) with 18 points and Eileen Holly (21) with 21 points.
The McKaigney cup is a senior men’s competition played for between Ennis and Gort which is decided on the best 6 cards from each club. Ennis are this year’s winners with a score of 262 points as against Gort’s 246 points.
The scoring six pairings from Ennis were Kieran O Loughlin and Sean Fitzpatrick with 47 points, Ollie Kennelly and Brendan Pyne with 45 points, Terry Hughes and Matt Flynn with 43 points, Liam McCannon and Michael Meagher with 43 points, John M Lillis and David Pender with 42 points, Peter Quinn and Michael Sullivan with 42 points.
Friday’s open singles sponsored by Martin Ward golf was won by Derek Clancy (25) (Shannon Golf club) with 37 points and he won on a countback from Tom Fitzgerald (27) (Athlone Golf club). In third place with 36 points was Conor Sexton (5) (Woodstock Golf Club).
The Ennis Men’s Barton Sheild team were beaten by Lahinch on Wednesday at Ennis.
Ennis ladies minor foursomes team were victorious over Dromoland on Saturday at Ennis on a score on 3 to 1. They will meet Ballyneety in the semi-final in July.
The team members are Helen Gallery and Martina Corbett, Ethna Murphy and Geraldine O’Rourke, Maureen Lynch and Betty O’Reilly, Joan Murphy and Attracta Williams. Sinead O ‘Sullivan is also a member of the panel which is managed by Mary M. McMahon.
Ennis ladies junior cup team defeated Castletroy and Ballybunion on Sunday at Shannon on a score on 3 to 2 in both matches. They are through to the semi-final where they will meet Killarney on July 5 in Castletroy. The team members are Suzanne Deane, Ann A. Gallery, Ruth Nihill, Mary T. McMahon and Deirdre O’Connor with substitute Mary Lenihan. The team manager is Patrice Ryan.
Woodstock Golf Club:
Category A in the ladies June medal at Woodstock was won by Chaye Kelly with 86 nett while the category B winner was Marianne McGough with 81 nett.
There will be an 18 hole v par competition for ladies this weekend. Last week’s AMR open singles in which 42 played saw Matty Nugent (10) win and take category A honours with 39 points. He has qualified for the end of season grand prize final.
Category 2 was won by Neil McCarthy (14) with 38 points with category 3 honours going to Paul O’Shea (23) with 36 points. Winners in the 2’s competition were Mike Liddy (4th hole) and Paudie O’Connell (8th hole).
In the weekend’s club singles, a Breen Building Design Woodstock Masters Order Of Merit competition, the winner was John Dempsey (16) with 39 points with Jason Dormer (3) with 33 points winning the gross. Category 1 (+ to 10) was won by Barry Scanlan (9) with 35 points from Aidan Mulcahy (6) with a similar score. Category 2 (11 to 18) was won by Vincent McInerney (16) with 36 points from Dylan Keogh Snr (18), also with 36 points while category 3 (19+) was won by Brendan Farrelly (19) with 36 points. Eighty six golfers played in the competition.
Winners in the Holmpatrick cup qualifier, a fourball betterball competition, were Robbie Dormer (14) and Paul Coote (14) with 49 points. They have qualified for the Munster Regional final which will be played in Woodstock in July.
The weekly open singles continues on this Thursday while the competition at the weekend will be for the minor, junior, intermediate and senior scratch cups.
Woodstock hosted a Play in Pink day on Tuesday raising funds for the Cancer Research Unit at University Hospital, Galway. The day was a huge success and raised €4,150.
Winners in the men’s section were Tony Nugent, Kieran Dromey, Jarlath Fahy and Nick Germaine with 108 points. They had five to spare over Frank Mc Enery, Martin White, Noel O’Connor (Sp.Point) and Mike Gardiner. In third place with 98 points were Paddy Meehan, Brian Kilker, Dickie Pyne and Eugene Conroy followed by P J Carmody, Tony Neville, Liam O’Connor and Steve Lahiffe with 95 points.
The ladies section was won by Bridie Hanrahan, Anne Kelly, Maureen Lynch and Betty O’Reilly (all Ennis) with 96 points and they were t wo ahead of the all Shannon team of Aine Twomey, Susie Meehan, Carmel McMahon and Shauna Moylan.
In third place with 92 points were Mary Mc Namara, Eimear Johnston (Spanish Point). Eileen Holly (Ennis) and Marie Mc Namara followed by Evelyn Lyons (Lahinch). Sheila O’Grady (Kilrush), Assumpta Stack (Adare Manor) and Aine Burke with 83 points.
East Clare Golf Club:
The men’s white tee singles v par competition at East Clare on Sunday was won by Declan Kinahan (26) with 5 up from Eddie Rosney (20) with 4 up with third place filled by Kieran Quinn (12) with 3 up. The gross was won by Michael Rochford (4) with 76.
The yellow tee singles v par competition was won by Edmund Bourke (22) with 10 up from Ger O’Halloran (22) with 2 up. Ian McNamara (6) won the gross.
The senior men’s outing to Dundrum golf club was won by Maurice Costello and Willie Roche with 45 points and they had one to spare over Michael Hayes and Seamus O’Dwyer. In third place with 43 points were Nick Ryan and Seamus Whelan followed by Pat and Kieran McNamara with a similar score.
The weekly senior mens competition was won by Martin McKeogh, John Collins and Jim Fahy.with 76 and they had two to spare over Danny Minogue, Nick Ryan and Martin Quinn.with third place filled by Tom Larkin, Steve Symes and Pearse O’ Sheil with 72.
Evelyn O’Brien (23) with 34 points won the ladies 18 hole singles.
The ladies Wednesday competition was won by Kay Grimes, Susan Whiting, Mary Jo. Minogue and Breda O’ Loghlin from Margaret MacNamara, Breda McCarthy, Mary Collins and Carmel Dillon.
Dromoland Golf Club:
The P & M sponsored ladies medal at Dromoland at the weekend was won by Siobhan Doohan with 72 net and she won on a countback from Karina Doyle. Trish O’Brien was third with 75 followed by Dolores Fox, also with 75. The gross was won by Suzanne McConway.
The 9 hole weekly stableford competition was won by Colette Maguire with 21 points and she was three ahead of Deirdre Cooney with Mary O’Donnell O’Brien, also with 18 points in third place.
The men’s competition was a rumble and it was won by Brian and David McNamara with 56 points from John and Dermot O’Neill who had a similar score. In third place, a point back, were Evan O’Mara and Conor Barry.
The 9 hole competition was won by David McNamara with 20 points from Neill Slattery with 17 with third place filled by Eamonn Power, also with 17.
Gort Golf Club:
Pat McNamara (22) was the winner of the men’s 18 hole singles at Gort sponsored by Powerhouse Gym with 40 points.
The category winners were Niall Loftus (7) with 37 points, Gerry Burke (18) with 38 points and Declan Fahy (19) with 39 points. Joe Moran (0) won the gross with 35 points.
Friday’s open 18 hole singles stableford was won by Shane Neylon (12) with 33 points.
In the ladies 18 hole stroke competition category 1 was won by Siobhan Forde (10) with 73. the category 2 winner was Phil Mulkerrins (29) with 72 while category 3 was won by Margaret Coleman (40) with 71.
Friday’s 18 hole singles winner was Margaret Coleman (41) with 39 points.
