SCARIFF and Kilmaley remain unbeaten after three rounds of the Clare Cup and hold the respective top spots in each division.

Difficult weather conditions were the order of the day as round three in the willwego.com Clare Cup went ahead at the weekend.

It proved a good weekend for Clonlara, Sixmilebridge and Ballyea who recorded their first wins of the campaign.

At the other end of the ladder Éire Óg and Crusheen remain pointless after going down to Sixmilebridge and Kilmaley respectively.

Kilmaley and Scariff have full points after three rounds while Feakle, and O’Callaghans Mills are a point back with two wins and a draw each.

Round 5 is scheduled for the weekend of April 24/25 and 26.

First points for Clonlara

Clonlara 1-14
Broadford 0-12
Venue: Clonlara

Reigning champions Clonlara got their first win in this season’s Clare Cup when they accounted for neighbours Broadford at Clonlara on Thursday evening.

The foundation for the win was laid in the opening half when, after playing with the aid of the wind, the home side held a ten point lead with the score at 1-10 to 0-3.

Midfielder Jathan McMahon struck for the game’s only goal while Micheál O’Loughlin landed 0-4, three from frees, in that opening period.

Broadford fought back in the second half but when they reflect on this outing they will be disappointed with the number of wides they were guilty of.

Clare senior squad members Dylan McMahon and Colm O’Meara were both released to play in this one and they filled the wing back positions for the home side.

The winners lost a couple of their starting fifteen to injury and they will be keeping their fingers crossed that the injuries aren’t too serious.

Scariff sparkle as Doora/Barefield deliver poor performance

Scariff 1-15
St. Joseph’s Doora/Barefield 0-9
Venue; Gurteen

Scariff were merited winners over St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield on Saturday afternoon to make it a third win on the trot. Donal Moloney’s side had already beat both Newmarket-on-Fergus and Inagh/Kilnamona by seven points before their latest outing which finished as a nine point victory.

Both sides went into the tie with full points from their opening two games and both were short a lot of players that followers believe will be in their teams later in the season.

The home side started well and had early points from Padraic O’Donovan and Mark O’Connor. Scariff responded with points from Rossa Keehan, Paddy Ryan and Eanna O’Brien before a O’Donovan effort tied up the game at 0-3 each.

Displaying the greater hunger for possession the visitors hit a purple patch which yielded 1-2 without reply, the game’s only goal coming from Keelan Hartigan in between points from Éanna O’Brien.

When the half time whistle sounded Scariff were five points clear with the score at 1-9 to 0-7.

The winners landed the opening two points of the second half to stretch their lead to seven and they went onto record a merited win with full back Michael Scanlan among their impressive performers.

The home side will be disappointed with their shooting in the second half when they recorded a number of wides from good scoring positions.

Scariff: William Kavanagh; Seamus McCaul, Michael Scanlan, Colm McCaul; Kian Moyles, Matthew Crotty (0-1), Sean Collins; Conor Downes, Jack Ryan (0-1); Diarmaid Nash, Keelan Hartigan (1-2), Rossa Keehan (0-1); Patrick Nugent, Paddy Ryan (0-3), Eanna O’Brien (0-6, 5 f);

Newmarket-on-Fergus record second win at Inamona’s expense

Newmarket-on-Fergus 1-18
Inagh/Kilnamona 0-17
Venue: Kilnamona

Newmarket-on-Fergus recorded successive victories in the Clare Cup as Inagh/Kilnamona fell to back to back defeats.

The game was played in Kilnamona after Newmarket-on-Fergus conceded home advantage.

Rain and wind made conditions difficult for the teams on a day when the visitors played some impressive hurling.

Despite playing with the aid of the elements, the home side were leading 0-10 0-8 but Newmarket-on-Fergus would have been the happier of the two teams at the interval.

Last day out when they defeated Clonlara, Clare U20 Michael Power led the scoring for the Blues with a tally of 5-3. Once again a member of the county U20 panel had a key role to play, this time it was Seán Arthur who scored 1-3 from play, the goal proving to be a decisive score.

Sixteen point win for Clooney/Quin as Corofin fall to third loss

Clooney/Quin 1-21
Corofin 0-8
Venue: Clooney

An all round sharper and better balanced Clooney/Quin recorded a comfortable win over Corofin in this tie played in wet and windy conditions at Clooney on Saturday evening.

The home side held the upperhand from the start and were eight points clear at the interval when the score was 1-9 to 0-4, the goal having come from Dannan Fox after a number of players were involved in a good movement.

Five unanswered points at the start of the second half saw the home side stretch their advantage and leave the visitors with a mountain to climb.

As always Corofin didn’t throw in the towel and the O’Loughlin brothers who made up the full back line and Diarmuid Cahill continued to take the game to their opponents.

Points shared in high scoring contest between Feakle & Mills

Feakle 2-23
O’Callaghans Mills 1-26
Venue: Feakle

East Clare neighbours Feakle and O’Callaghans Mills played out a high scoring draw when they clashed in round three in Division 1B of the Clare Cup on Thursday evening.

It was quite an entertaining game with some good scores from each side. Oisin Donnellan was Feakle’s top scorer with 1-11 to his credit, one point more than Seanie Boyce’s tally for the Mills.

The result means that both sides remain unbeaten with two wins and a draw each after three rounds.

Feakle had the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half and this played a part in helping them to a six point lead at the break when the score was 0-18 to 0-12.

On the changeover the Mills got a grip on proceedings and they got in front before the end of the third quarter. They were two points in front when Oisin Donnellan converted a penalty after Eoghan Daly had been fouled, to put his side back in front.

Kilmaley 0-13
Crusheen 0-11
Venue: Kilmaley

Kilmaley landed the last three points in the closing minutes to maintain their winning run in this season’s Clare Cup with victory over Crusheen on Saturday evening.

They achieved this hard earned win playing with fourteen men in the second half after Thomas McGuire picked up a second yellow card just before half time.

Crusheen enjoyed the better of matters in the opening half and they led by five, 0-9 to 0-4 at the interval.

On the resumption Kilmaley fought back and they levelled the game at 0-9 each before Crusheen pointed twice to lead by two with just over five minutes remaining.

As they have done in their earlier games in this campaign, Kilmaley finished strongly on a day when Joe Carmody, Michael O’Malley and Jason Keane-Hayes impressed.

Strong team performance from Ballyea

Ballyea 0-15
Clarecastle 1-9
Venue; Clarecastle

Ballyea’s ability to land points from long range when playing with the aid of the breeze in the first half, proved key as they proved too strong for hitherto unbeaten Clarecastle in this parish derby contest at Clarecastle on Saturday evening.

Centre back Jack Browne with three and midfielder Gearoid O’Connell with two led the way in the opening half and when the half time whistle sounded Ballyea were six clear with the score at 0-10 to 0-4.

With the assistance of the wind in the second half, Clarecastle closed the gap but a hungrier Ballyea regained the upperhand and they had pulled six clear as the final whistle approached.

The Magpies struck for a goal from David Tuohy in the closing minutes but it was too late to prevent Ballyea from taking the points, thanks to a good all round team effort in a tie played in difficult weather conditions.
