AFTER more than a century at the heart of village life in Quin, Malachy’s Bar is entering a new chapter.
The historic premises, owned by the Hassett family for four generations, is now available to rent, offering a unique opportunity for a new tenant to take the reins of one of Clare’s most famous and colourful pubs.
For generations, Malachy’s has been a meeting place, a music venue, a market square, a storytelling hub and a focal point of community life. While many pubs can boast a long history, few can claim a heritage like that of Malachy’s.
Situated in the shadow of Quin Abbey, the pub has welcomed everyone from local farmers, tradespeople to tourists. In years gone by, Malachy’s became a regular stop for visitors and staff associated with nearby Knappogue Castle, Dromoland Castle and Shannon Airport.
For generations, the Hassett family have been custodians of the building itself and of the warmth, character and sense of welcome that made Malachy’s famous.
The pub’s most famous moment came in August 1977, when it found itself making headlines around Ireland and Britain during what became known as ‘The Siege of Malachy’s Bar’.
A newspaper article published in the Sunday Mirror described how publican Patrick Hassett and several patrons remained inside the pub overnight while Gardaí sought entry during what was reported as a routine inspection. The incident generated national and international media attention, ensuring Malachy’s place in Irish pub folklore.
Locals still fondly recall the travelling musicians, folk singers, storytellers and free spirits who gathered there throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s.
In 2008 the pub went under a complete refurbishment with the installation of a cold room facility and a space for a commercial kitchen.
In more recent years, Malachy’s continued to evolve while remaining deeply rooted in the community. It also built a reputation for hosting weddings, birthdays, All-Ireland victories, christenings, and retirements over the years.
Malachy’s is lucky to have its own car park which it became home to a popular farmers’ market, showcasing local producers, bakers, growers and craftspeople.
Today, as the Hassett family looks to the future, they hope to find a tenant who appreciates the responsibility and opportunity that comes with taking over such a well-known establishment.
