AN investigation has been launched after a man was found dead in Limerick Prison this morning.
Independent.ie reports that the man was in his twenties and was serving a sentence for an offence committed in Clare.
It is understood the man is not from the county.
In a statement to The Clare Echo, the Irish Prison Service confirmed the death of a person in the custody of the Irish Prison Service.
The service said the deceased’s next of kin have been notified and the death is being investigated.
A spokesperson said, “The Irish Prison Service can confirm that there was a death in custody of a person in the custody of the Irish Prison Service on 12th January 2023 and the next of kin have been notified.
“This death in custody will be investigated by the Irish Prison Service, The Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant. The cause of death is determined by the Coroner’s Office”, the spokesperson added.
