Drivers are not the only ones using “excessive speed” on the stretch of road from the Circular Road to the Cornmarket in Ennis with an elected representative flagging that ponies and traps are also going within touching distance of the speed limit.

Alternative traffic calming measures have been sought by Cllr Mary Howard (FG) who informed a recent meeting of the Ennis Municipal District that she had received “a number of complaints regarding excessive speed used by not just vehicles but by ponies and traps” from the Circular Rd to the Cornmarket.

Senior executive engineer, Eamon O’Dea detailed that speed surveys would be carried out. “If the speeds recorded warrants further interventions, the details will be forwarded to An Garda Síochána for their review of traffic enforcement locations”.

Cllr Howard believed the issue had escalated during the lockdown when persons were confined to their own locality. Support for the proposal was also voiced by Cllr Mark Nestor (FF) who was hopeful a solution could be implemented.
