STAFF at Obair in Newmarket-on-Fergus have been left devastated by a burglary which has rocked the service to its core.
In the early hours of last Wednesday morning (July 1st), a sum of approximately €600 was stolen from a locker at the premises. The money belonged to Meals on Wheels staff and was set aside for a planned staff night out.
After taking the money from the locker in the Tradaree building in Newmarket-on-Fergus, two individuals made their way up via Avondale and onto the Ennis Rd. A still image of the CCTV footage has been shared by Obair via social media, it shows a person wearing a berghaus jacket, a pair of black runners with grey soles and they appeared to be carrying a weapon.
A spokesperson for Obair in a statement to The Clare Echo said they were “absolutely devastated” following the break-in. “The people responsible appeared to know exactly what they were doing”.
“Our Meals on Wheels team work tirelessly every single day, delivering meals and supporting older people across the community. To have the money they had saved for a well-earned night out stolen is heart-breaking,” the spokesperson added. “In all the years Obair has been operating, we have never experienced anything like this. We are shocked and deeply saddened”.
An Garda Síochána have been made aware of a video circulating on social media where an individual is understood to have made reference to the robbery. Gardaí have confirmed an investigation is ongoing after they received a report of an incident of burglary.
