NO “adverse trends” of businesses being forced to close permanently as a result of COVID-19 are visible in Co Clare.

Head of Enterprise at the Clare Local Enterprise Office, Padraic McElwee has said they are “not seeing an adverse trend” during the pandemic of businesses in the county having to shut their doors as a result of the economic impact.

At a recent meeting of Clare County Council’s Economic Development Strategic Policy Committee (SPC), Cllr Pat Daly (FF) sought an indication “on the amount of businesses that have closed down permanently in Clare due to COVID”. He prefaced his remarks by praising the active role of the LEO in particular Mr McElwee.

According to McElwee there are “no sense of closures” caused directly by the pandemic. “From the client base we interact with, I’m aware of one to two percent closures, one of them might have been because of COVID-19 but the very nature of start-ups is some work and others don’t,” he stated.
