Newmarket-on-Fergus will have a GP from Monday June 22nd.

Dr Colum Galvin, the Principle Medical Director of Saffron and Blue Medical Centre will provide the GP service from Carrigoran’s Health and Wellness Centre, beginning on June 22nd.

Confirmation has been issued by the HSE on Friday morning that Ballynacally native, Dr Gavin will be providing the service.

Following the retirement of Dr Colm Hackett last May, the people of Newmarket-on-Fergus have been without a GP. Those that needed treatment had to travel to Shannon Medical Centre while locals had lost faith in the prospect of an appointment with the possibility of a new GP falling through in September.

“It’s taken a lot of time and work to finally get to this point, but I’m relieved we finally have confirmation that full-time GP services will resume at Newmarket very soon,” Deputy Joe Carey (FG) told The Clare Echo.

He admitted that his preference and that of many personnel from Newmarket-on-Fergus was for the service to be located in the village.

“Ideally we would have liked the new service to be a more central location and this was something I raised on several occasions. However, Dr Gavin has determined that Carrigoran House, which also houses a health and wellness centre, has the facilities which will enable it to deliver the best service to the people of Newmarket.”
