AN OFFICIAL motion is to be put before Clare County Council to “rectify a historical cartographic error” by extending the county boundary to include the town of Gort.

The bombshell proposal notes that Gort is a “natural gateway” to the Banner County and its proximity to the Burren would help to unlock its potential as a tourist destination.

A vision for the ‘Burren hub town’ is being endorsed by three of Clare’s councillors, who are preparing today to submit this motion at an emergency meeting of Clare County Council.

“Once the annexation is complete, Clare County Council will take full control of Coole Park,” states a document which has been seen by The Clare Echo. “We will unveil a new section of the literary carvings on the Autograph Tree with the names of the 2013 and 2024 All-Ireland winning teams. Furthermore, to ensure Gort’s energy independence, we will bypass all those planning delays and grant immediate approval for a mega-biogas plant”.

Councillors representing the Gort-Kinvara Municipal District, were reportedly seen polishing hurleys in a defensive stance near the border at Crusheen however a Clare councillor has added fuel to the fire, telling us, “Let’s be honest, Gort is basically Ennis North. The people of Gort already come to Ennis for their big shop and their driving tests. It’s high time their property taxes followed their hearts. We’re not invading; we’re liberating them from the burden of maroon jerseys”.

At the time of going to press, rumours were circulating that if successful, the M18 will be renamed “The Marty Morrissey Superhighway” while North Clare councillors are expected to table a motion to annex Inis Oirr into County Clare.
