Newmarket Celtic A added to their list of title wins when they captured the premier league cup crown with victory over a fancied Avenue United side at the county grounds on Friday night.

Played before a big attendance, the winners took control in the opening half with two goals and from here on Avenue were chasing the game. With two wins over Celtic earlier this season in the league cup and the league, Avenue followers went to Friday’s game with high hopes of recording another win but on this occasion Celtic were the sharper side.

Midway through the opening period, Celtic took the lead through Kevin Harnett and they doubled their advantage ten minutes later when Aaron Rudd, later named as the man of the match, found the net.

Newmarket Celtic held the upperhand from here on despite losing their central defender and captain Paddy Purcell to injury.
