A NEWMARKET-ON-FERGUS representative has cited “heavier” rainfall in recent years as part of his bid to secure the granting of drainage works in Carrigoran.

An appeal for drainage works to be completed on the side of the road fronting the houses on the section of road past Carrigoran House towards the Monument Cross was issued by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) before a meeting of the Shannon Municipal District. “The piping of this drain would improve and enhance the entrances to these houses,” he stated.

Senior executive engineer in the Shannon MD, Tom Mellett noted that the drainage system was cleaned by the local authority last year. He said that arrangements would be made to tidy the gullies and channels along the section of road at some stage this year.

Despite the addition of the M18, motorists still opt to use this backroad into Shannon, Cllr McMahon remarked. “This section of the road is still heavily used despite the motorway being in place, when it rains very heavily it is a flow of water coming very dangerously and halfway up the hill you will have to stop. It can cause problems for people living in the houses along the road. Things have changed dramatically in recent years with heavier rain”. The motion was seconded by Cllr PJ Ryan (IND).
