Seamus Hayes winner of the Fergus O’Callaghan Memorial Trophy at Monkstown Golf Club in Cork receiving his prize from Munster Press Golf Society Captain Eoin Daly.
LISSYCASEY native Seamus Hayes picked up the Fergus O’Callaghan Cup after producing the best round among the members of Munster Press Golf Society last Thursday.
Named in memory of the late editor of The Cork Examiner (now The Irish Examiner) from 1976 to 1994, the Fergus O’Callaghan Cup is played for by members of the Munster Press Golf society from Clare, Limerick, Kerry and Cork in Monkstown Golf Club last Thursday.
Ennis based Seamus, a keen golfer and a freelance reporter with The Clare Echo who pens a weekly golf round-up for the publication had his first win over the year among the Munster Press Golf Society to take home the O’Callaghan Cup.
Also on the fairways of Monkstown Golf Club were Sixmilebridge’s Gerry McInerney formerly Deputy Editor of The Clare Champion and Ennis’ Tony Mulvey who was a reporter for sixty years with The Champion. Ex Editor of The Limerick Leader, Eugene Phelan who is now living in Lahinch was also in action.
The Munster Press Golf Society is one of the longest running golf societies in Ireland with an active membership that competes in golf clubs around the province year after year. The society has now been running for 49 years. 2027 will see the society celebrate 50 years.
They will have upcoming outings in Lahinch, Doonbeg, Castlegregory and Ballybunnion before the end of the year.
Seamus is the county’s most experienced sports journalist who spent forty nine years working for The Clare Champion, leaving the paper in August 2018 before he began contributing to this parish and The Clare People.
In 2018, Seamus was bestowed with lifetime membership of the National Union of Journalists alongside the late Colman Garrihy of Moy.
