*President Pat Shannon presents the President’s Prize to Jason Hanrahan.

President Pat Shannon’s prize was played for at Kilrush at the weekend and resulted in victory for Jason Hanrahan (25) with 42 points.

He won, with a better back nine, from Neil Browne (9) who also returned 42 points. They were followed by John McGrath (14) with 41 points, Greg Young (9) with 40 points, John McNeilis (20) with 39 oins and Gearoid Williams (15) with 39 points. Shane Lillis (+1) won the gross with 32 points.

The category winners were Gearoid Kelly (11) with 39 points, John Donnelly (16) with 37 points and Patrick Coleman (20) with 38 points. Matt Rea (23) with 21 points and John Cuggeran (12) with 22 points won the nines.

Other prize winners were, Jim Young Snr (12) with 36 points (past president), Kevin Clancy (14) (committee) with 37 points, Ger Brennan (nearest the pin) and Shane Lillis (long drive).

The president’s prize to the ladies was won by Ann Marie Donnellan (18) wth 20 oints from Margaret Donnelly (20) with 19 points.

Evan McGibney (22) won the president’s prize to the juniors with 32 points from Joseph McMahon (18) who had a similar score.

In the Hyland’s Burren Hotel open mixed foursomes, the winners were Joan O’Malley and Michael J Hogan (19.5) with 60.5. In second place with 64 were Carmel Verling and Ronan Herbert (13) followed by Sean and Mary Lyons (17), also with 64. In fourth place were Pat J Shannon and Mary Nolan (17) who also returned 64 while the gross was won by Anne Gallagher and Gearoid Kelly (11) with 76.

The lady president’s (Ailish Lorigan) prize was also played for last week when the winner was Mary O’Sullivan (24) with 38 points from Sheena Mahony (24) who was the overall winner with 40 points. In third spot was Joan O’Malley (20) with 37, followed by Claire Pyne (21) with 35, Kathleen Haugh (36) with 34 points and Lucy Hayes (29) with 34 points. Fiona Kinsella won the gross with 22 points.

The nines were won by Margaret Donnelly (19) with 19 points and Mary Young(23) with 21 points while Ann Marie Donnellan (16) won the committee prize with 31 points and Anne Brennan (12) won the past president’s section with 30 points.

The 9 hole competition was won by Hanora O’Dea-Kilkenny from Margaret Griffin. In the lady president’s prize to the girls the winner was Laura McGibney from Emma Nagle with third spot filled by Laura Nagle and Lucy Murphy-Downes while fourth place went to Robyn McInerney and Hanna Murphy-Downes.

Dromoland Golf Club:

Friday’s open singles winner at Dromoland was Rian Moriarty with 44 points and he had seven to spare over Kyle Neylon with third spot filled by Diarmuid McMahon. Cathal Ruane won the gross with 35 points.

The Tuesday junior competition winners were Darragh McNamara with 37 points off the white tees, Aaron Piccolo with 44 points off the black tees and Suzie Cusack with 34 points in the girls section.

Thursday’s winner was Cillian Mahon with 42 points off the white tees, Aaron Piccolo with 43 points off the black tees and Saoirse Brennan with 22 points in the girls section.

In the weekly 9 hole competition, Robert Meehan won from Liam Moloney with Patrick Mccoy in third spot and all three returned 21 points.

The weekend’s men’s 18 hole stableford competition was won by Conor Barry with 43 points from Shane Collins with 42, Niall Geraghty with 40 and Frank Conway with 39 while Seamus Cusack won the gross with 37.

The ladies 18 hole competition winner was Cathy Casey with 32 points while the ladies 9 hole stableford winner was Leslie O’Flynn with 18 points from Mary Galvin with 17 points.

Lahinch Golf Club:

Despite the miserable wet, windy conditions last Saturday, 129 lady members braved the elements to compete for lady captain Margaret Cooney’s prize on the Old Course while 18 senior ladies teed off on the Castle Course for the Senior Ladies prize.

With fading light, the last player to finish play, Áine O’Brien, won the prize on countback with 35 points while Barbara McEvoy won the senior ladies 18-hole competition with Gerri Baggot winning the 9-hole competition. Margaret thanked all members for contributing to her chosen charity, the Clare Branch of the Alzheimer’s Association, with just under €2,000 being raised.

All roads lead to Castle Golf Club next week where the ladies senior cup team will defend their All-Ireland title. While some of the panel members are unavailable due to college and work commitments overseas, team managers, Valerie Hassett and Aedin McCarthy and their team are leaving no stone unturned in preparing for the challenge ahead.

Members who are planning on travelling to Dublin should register online as restrictions may apply on the number of spectators who can attend in accordance with current public health measures. Members should note that they need to register separately for Friday (Auguts 20) and Saturday August 21.

After a delay of twelve months due to Covid-19, one of the senior cup players, Áine Donegan, is travelling to the USA this weekend to commence her studies and golf scholarship with the Indiana Hoosiers.

Woodstock Golf Club:

Last week’s club singles at Woodstock was won by David Greene (17) with 45 points from Sean O’Loughlin (20) with 43, Hugh McGath (10) with 42, Clive Kelleher (15) with 42 and Brian Logue (18) with 42. Ross Kenny Junior (+5) won the gross with 66.

The Play in Pink day in aid of Breast Cancer Research, was a huge success lat Tuesday with a full timesheet helping to provide valuable funds.

The ladies section was won by the all Ennis team of Ann (16) and Helen Gallery (22), Ann Pyne Gallery (26) and Annette Keane (31) with 88 points.

They had two points to spare over Ann O Loughlin (19). Rita O Brien (22). Patricia Moroney (21) all Ennis and Marianne Mc Gough, Woodstock (20) with third spot filled by Mary Gleeson (29), Mary Mc Namara (22), Marian Keane, Lahinch (25) and Ber Cavanagh Nenagh. (29) with 84 points.

In the men’s section the winning team comprised Paul Coote (12), Ollie McNamara (15). Tony Coote (19) and Willie Thompson (20) with 103 points and they had two to spake over the all Gort team of Declan Grimes (20) Gerry Broderick (21) Cyril O Doherty (26) and Ken Murray (26). In third spot with 95 points were Kieran Quinn (17), Pat McMahon (25), John Duffy East Clare (14) and Kieran Kennedy East Clare. (19).

This weekend, the Michael Cullinan memorial cup will be played for.

Last week’s open singls was won by Darragh Casey (10) with 43 points from Michael Crosby (19) with 42 points. Conor James Clancy (21) with 41 points was third followed by Colm Mullen (4) with 40 points while Tony Cleary (+1) won the gross with 38 points.

The August monthly medal was won by Fiachra McMahon (10) with 66 from John Dempsey (21) with 71, Cathal McCoy (13) with 71, Matthew McGrath (7) with 71, and Tony Neville (15) with 71 while Tony Cleary (+1) won the gross with 75.

Ennis Golf Club:

Last week’s ladies 18 hole stableford competition was won by Peggy Costello (23) with 36 points from Mary Lenihan (17) with 35 and Kitty Morris (14) with 34. The 9 hole competition winner was Aideen Considine (13) with 19 points from Pat Leach (17) with 16 points and Mary O’Halloran (16), also with 16 points.

The 9 hole stroke competition for improvers was won by Mary Curley (29) with 46 nett. CoCo Restaurant are kindly sponsoring Ladies Golf on this Wednesday and on Sunday next.

The Ennis team of Rita 0’Brien, Della Burns and Claire Ruane will compete in the Munster cup at Ballyneety on Wednesday next (August 25th).

Mary McMahon, Ethna Murphy and Helen Hartnett will represent the club in the Elenor Tivve event at Mitchelstown on Monday, (August 23rd).

Steve and Della Burns managed the club’s mixed foursome team to victory over over Doonbeg, a win which has qualified them to meet Shannon in the next round on this Thursday.

The President’s Prize will take place on this Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22. The 18 hole stableford competition is open to both ladies and men

Clare camogie classic:

Woodstock Golf club is the venue for a team of four classic in aid of Clare camogie on this Thursday and Friday, August 19 and 20. Tee times can be booked by contacting Conor Dolan on 087-9371321 and teams cost €160.00

Cooraclare GAA:

Cooraclare GAA will hold it’s annual golf classic at Kilrush on this Saturday August 21. Teams of four cost €100.00 and tee times can be booked through Michael Studdert at 087-2299476,,

St. Breckans’ 50th anniversary:

St. Breckans GAA will hold a golf classic as part of the club’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The event will take place at Woodstock golf club on Friday and Saturday September 3 and 4. Tee times can be booked by contacting 086-0341361

O’Callaghans Mills GAA:
O’Callaghans Mills GAA club’s annual fund raising golf classic will be held on Friday afternoon August 27 and Saturday August 28 at the East Clare club.  It will be a team of 4 event. The winning team will receive the Fr. Connor McNamara Cup and a 4 ball at Carton House golf club, Maynooth and a ‘One 4 All’ voucher to the value of €500 for the team.
