ENNIS RFC are ‘bursting with pride’ as Aoife Corey is set to make her international debut today against Scotland in the Womens 6 Nations opener.

Ennis women Aoife Corey makes her debut for Ireland while Kilmihil native Edel McMahon is named as captain for the meeting at HIVE Stadium, Edinburgh at 2:30pm today, April 26.

Corey began her rugby career with Ennis RFC in 2017 before making the move to UL Bohemians in recent years as the full-back’s career blossomed with Munster. The Ennis native has been handed the number fifteen jersey as she starts at full back against Scotland.

Ireland are bolstered by a recent good run of form having recently beaten Wales 40-14 and Italy 54-12.

Former Connacht and Wasps flanker Edel McMahon captains the side in their first outing of this year’s tournament. The Kilmihil woman was a talented Gaelic footballer in the past winning intermediate and junior club All-Irelands, as well as a Clare senior title in 2019 and winning a further All-Ireland Minor at intercounty level with Clare.

Since making her international rugby debut in 2018, McMahon has amassed 30 appearances and was nominated for Irish Rugby Player of the Year in 2020. McMahon will lead the side in Edinburgh as Ireland look for their first Six Nations Crown since 2015.

In a statement, Ennis RFC said, “We are bursting with pride as we cheer on Aoife Corey, who will earn her first senior cap for Ireland this Saturday against Scotland in Edinburgh.

“Aoife was one of the very first girls to play rugby at Ennis RFC — and now she represents her country at the highest level. An incredible journey that began on our pitches! Everyone at Ennis RFC will be shouting loud for you this weekend. Best of luck, Aoife — we are so proud!”

It comes just weeks after Ennis-Kilrush Ladies secured promotion to the Women’s Division of the Energia All-Ireland League.
