SHANNON STUDENT, Ella Hasty has become the first recipient of the Trane Technologies STEM Career Pathways Scholarship for female students.

From Drumgeely, Ella has been awarded the prestigious scholarship for female students taking engineering courses at the Atlantic Technological University (ATU). The scholarship represents a collaboration between the charity Teen-Turn and Trane with ATU.

St Patrick’s Comprehensive School in Shannon have been supported by Teen-Turn through the running of their after school programs, Technovation and Project Squad and through project based learning, the girls participate in research and design STEM projects as well as learning to design, build and program apps, and develop business plans.

Now nearing the end of her first semester in ATU where she is studying engineering, Ella said she was thrilled to be awarded the scholarship. “I am really enjoying the course and having this scholarship makes it easier for me to focus on my studies without worrying about the increasing costs of studying at third level”.

Jacquie Murphy, a teacher in St Patrick’s Comprehensive and the lead mentor with Teen-Turn was “incredibly proud” of her past pupil. She commended Ella for “following her passion in engineering” and said she was “delighted that a local company like Trane Thermoking have committed to working with young women through their partnership with Teen-Turn. A scholarship such as this cannot be underestimated in the way that it can change a young woman’s life and experiences”.

Trane Technologies Thermo King, through their strategic brands Trane and Thermo King, and their portfolio of innovative products and services, are a world leader in bringing efficient and sustainable climate solutions to buildings, homes and transportation whilst putting the planet first.

Gail Quinn, HR Leader & HRBP EMEA, Trane Technologies explained, “These scholarships have been designed to support young women to pursue STEM related education. The aim is to create a greater female representation in STEM related careers. The initiative is aligned to the ‘Sustainable Futures” Global Corporate Strategy of Trane Technologies, which deploys Trane Technologies resources to create opportunities for those under-represented in our industry, so they will be equipped and inspired to lead innovation in our field and in our world”.

Trane Technologies has committed to fund two 4 year STEM Career Pathways Scholarships every year from September 2022, with priority given to Teen Turn and/or HEAR Programme participants. Each scholarship is valued to a total of €24,000 with €6,000 being awarded on an annual basis as the student progresses through her education over 4 years.

Teen-Turn aims to provide teen girls, particularly those from underserved areas, the opportunity to gain hands-on STEM experience so that they can visualize themselves in those kinds of careers and therefore make third level course choices accordingly. Through after school activities, work placements, mentoring, and alumnae networking and career development programming, they support 1000+ girls from ‘Junior Cert to Job’.
