SPEEDING ON PHAYERS RD in Meelick has come under the spotlight with signs to be erected reminding motorists of the current limit in place.

Inclusion of Phayers Rd in the next countywide speed limit review has been confirmed while elected representatives have been vocal in their pleas for a reduction from 80kph to be considered.

Both Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) and Cllr Pat Oโ€™Gorman (FF) tabled motions on the matter at a recent sitting of the Shannon Municipal District. Flashing speed signs were sought by Cllr Ryan between the junction with the N18 and Whiteโ€™s Cross while Cllr Oโ€™Gorman asked for speed limit signs to be erected and for its reduction to then be considered.

Senior engineer in Clare County Councilโ€™s roads and transportation section, John Leahy clarified that the limit on the L3110 at Meelick was 80km/hr. โ€œThis road links the L3102 (60km/hr) to the dual carriageway (100km/hr). Signage will be installed on the L3110 to indicate the 80km/hr speed limitโ€.

Tom Mellett, senior executive engineer in the Shannon MD explained that the existing speed limit โ€œequates to the national speed limit for this class of road. Driver feedback signs would normally be used to reinforce locations where the speed limit is lower than the upper limit for that class of road. The transportation department have provided an assurance that the speed limit along this road will be included in the next countywide speed limit review. It would be appropriate to revisit the issue of driver feedback signs depending on the outcome of the reviewโ€.

Residents on the road have complained that โ€œthe speed on that section of road is excessive,โ€ Cllr Ryan flagged. โ€œThey want a reduction on the speed limit but itโ€™s not as simple as applying for a reduction, some reductions took a year and a half to get through. In the meantime, my request is that there would be flashing signs on the roadโ€.

An approximate 22 houses are on the road, Cllr Oโ€™Gorman outlined. โ€œYou are coming off a dual carriageway which is 100km/h and Iโ€™m told drivers are inclined to keep going at 100km/h when they come off because there is no speed limit sign,โ€ he said while expressing the belief 60km/h for the whole road would be reasonable.

Support was voiced by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) and Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) with the latter describing driver feedback signs as โ€œone of the most effective items weโ€™ve seen, they are a very cost effective way to help people to slow down on dangerous sections of roadโ€.
