THE ‘Hands Off Ennis Post Office Field Campaign’ has welcomed the adoption of a development plan variation protecting the Post Office Field.
PRO of the campaign, cllr. Tommy Guilfoyle (SF) welcomed the development ahead of the June sitting of the local authority.
The Clarecastle-based cllr welcomed the conclusion of a statutory process known as a variation of the Clare County Development Plan, which was finalised at the June 2026 County Council Meeting. A key outcome of the variation is that previous Council and Ennis 2040 proposals to spend over €5 million on intrusive ‘hard’ development within the Post Office Field will not proceed.
Speaking on behalf of the campaign, Guilfoyle stated “The Hands Off Ennis Post Office Field Campaign was established to prevent building on the Field and to secure its future as a protected nature reserve. This result proves that people power can bring about real change”, he added.
Campaign chairperson, Martin Vernon, thanked those who had helped with the campaign along the way, saying “This represents a significant step towards ensuring the Post Office Field remains protected as a vital natural space in the heart of Ennis. The campaign thanks the public, the County Councillors, and Council officials who engaged with the Variation consultation process”.
“As a result of a strong, clear, and united community voice, the Chief Executive’s final report for councillors reflects the widespread support for preventing any development on the field”, he continued.
Long‑time neighbour of the Post Office Field and long-standing Ennis resident, Mr. Donal Duggan, extended “sincere thanks to everyone over the last three decades who has supported the effort of residents, community groups, environmental advocates, and Ennis County Councillors who sought an end to the neglect of the Field and stood together to protect this unique green space”.
Duggan paid tribute to campaigners who had passed on before they could see its success, saying “I and the campaign committee also wish to acknowledge three dedicated campaigners who sadly did not live to see this moment; Cornelia Wahli, Bernie Loftus, and Dermot Hayes. Their commitment, energy, and belief in the importance of the field continues to inspire this campaign”.
Looking ahead to the future, Martin Vernon outlined that “The campaign will now evolve into one committed to working constructively with adjoining residents, Clare County Council, and environmental bodies to nurture the Post Office Field as a thriving nature reserve and a cherished community asset for generations to come”.
