Lady captain Joan Hoctor’s prize was played for at Shannon last weekend when Connie Corry (20), winner of the Rineanna trophy a few days earlier, maintained that impressive form when emerging as the winner of Joan’s prize with 72 nett.
Ellie Pyke (14) had the best score with 71 but she wasn’t eligible for the main prize as she didn’t have the required number of competitions played. She was awarded second place and was followed in third place by Suzanne McMahon (19) with 73 nett. They were followed by Margaret Hope (17) with a similar score. Michelle Pyke (8) won the gross with 84 nett.
The category winners were Madge Young (13) with 73 nett, Pauline Nally (19) with 73 nett and Margaret Ryan (35) with 74.
The nines were won by Emma O’Halloran (15) with 35 nett and Linda Boland (21) with 32 nett while Mary Sheehan (19) won the past captain’s category with 73.
Other prize winners were Catriona Duggan (28) with 26 points for the 9 hole competition, with second place in this category going to Mary O’Brien (22) with 23 points; Sandra Ferguson (putting), Ellie Pyke (longest drive), Michelle Pyke (nearest the pin) and Katrina O’Neill (guests).
The lady captain’s prize to the men was won by Joseph Sheehan (20) with 39 points and he had one to spare over Ray Ryan (19). Declan Carmody (25) was third with 37 points followed by Ben Moylan (13), also with 37 points. Edward Hickey (0) won the gross with 36 points while Don Hoctor (16) won the guests section with 36 points.
Connie Corry (20) with 38 points won the ladies Rineanna trophy on a count back from Lucy Twomey (29) with Joan Hoctor, also with 38 points, in third place. Laura O’Brien (8) with 27 points won the gross
Winners in the 2’s competition were Ettie Gallery (17th), Madge Young (17th) and Laura O’Brien (4th).
Last week’s men’s open singles was won by Paul Ryan (24) with 40 points from Gerard Sheehan (7) with 38 points with third place filled by Mark Coleman (3) with 37 points.. The gross was won by John Dolan (+2) with 40 points.
In the men’s green tee challenge Michael Mulqueen (10) won with 39 points from Kai Khetan (11) with 38 with Darren Griffin (9), also with 38 points, in third place. Edward Hickey (-1) won the gross with 38 points.
The weekly 9 hole competition was won by Conor O’Callaghan (9) with 21 points.
Kilrush Golf Club:
Vice-Captain Jim Kelly’s prize was played for at Kilrush at the weekend when the winner was Ruairi Young (10) with 43 points. He won by one from Fergal O’Grady (15) with third place filled by Gavin Duffy (20) with 41 points followed by Brian Conway (6) with 39 and Brendan Carey (20) also with 39 points.
The gross was won by Padraic O’Dubhshlaine, (6) with 34 points while the categories were won by Barry Coleman, (16) with 37 points, John McNeilis (20) with 38 points and Brendan Carrig (28) with 39 points.
The nines were won by Brian Rogers (33) with 24 points and Martin McNamara (21) with 21 points.
Ryan Butchers ladies 18 hole stableford competition was won by Anna Moody (21) with 40 points. The category winners were Mary Bolton (18) with 34 points, Mary G. Nolan (23) with 37 points and Celia O’Grady (31) with 26 points.
Agnes Shannon (25) with 67 nett won lady vice captain Fiona Kinsella’s prize at Kilrush last week. Suzie Glynn (42) with 65 was second followed by Anne Cooper (38) with 67, Mary G. Nolan (23) with 69, Grace Howard (36) with 70 and Ailish Lorigan (20) with 70.
The gross was won by Anne Marie Donnellan with 84 while the category winners were Mary Lyons (18) with 70, Miriam Saunders (25) with 70 and Celia O’Grady (31)with 72. The nines were won by Joan O’Malley (25) with 32.5 and Kathleen Haugh (37) with 33.5
Woodstock Golf Club:
President Mary McNamara’s prize will be played for at Woodstock on this Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5. This is a golfer of the year order of merit event. The draw will take place this Thursday evening.
The mixed scramble sponsored by Holly’s Haven Pharmacy was won by Liam O’Connor, Edel Clune, Vincent O’Grady and Siobhan Maher with 23.5. In second place with 25.6 were Johnnie Clune, Hannah O’Brien and Mary McNamara.
In last week’s open singles sponsored by AMR golf the overall winner was Ger Browne (32) with 45 points and he also took the category 3 honours. He has qualified for the grand final at the end of the season. The gross was won by Ross Darmody (2) with 34 points while category 1 was won by Barry Scanlan (9) with 39 points with category 2 won by Adrian Kearney (11) with 41 points.
Winners in the 2’s competition were Chris McGrath at the 6th and Mark Hogan at the 4th.
In the Breen Building Design Woodstock Masters Order Of Merit club singles the winner was Gerry Kelly (6) with 42 points while the gross was won by Kieran Dromey (8) with 33 points.
Category 1 (+ to 10) was won by John Mulcahy (6) with 37 points and he was one ahead of Aidan Mulcahy (5). Category 2 (11 to 18) was won by Brian Kilker (17) with 39 points from Henry Butler (15) with 38 points while the category 3 (19 +) winner was Denis Ryan (20) with 41 points. Winners in the 2’s competition were Ken O’Shaughnessy (14th), Sean Crowe and Henry Butler (both at the 8th).
The open singles continues on this Thursday and the mixed scramble continues on Thursday evening. The ladies 18 hole singles stableford competition was won by Kathleen McEnery with 39 points and she was two ahead of Mary McNamara with Siobhan Maher in third place with 34 points.
Spanish Point Golf Club:
The Eleanor Tivy qualifier was the ladies competition at Spanish Point last week when the winner was Fiona O’Boyle with 35 points. She won by three from Niamh O’Regan.with Ann Dunne, also with 32 points in third place.
East Clare Golf Club:
The men’s competition at East Clare on Sunday was singles stableford which was won by Corey Downes (29) with 44 points, one more than Michael McInerney (22) with third place filled by Noel Earley (21) with 41 points. Jack Whelan (0) won the gross with 70 while the birdie hole winner was Michael Cooney.
The senior men played for the John Stack Memorial trophy, a fourball competition which was won by Colm Kelly and Mike Noonan with 47 points. They were two ahead of Danny Minogue and John Collins.with third place filled by Nick Ryan and Michael Heffernan with 44 points and they were followed by John Nihill and Paddy O’ Brien, also with 44 points.
The ladies Wednesday competition was won by Brid Hayes, Amanda Dalton and Breda McCarthy from Mary Hogan, Margaret Egan and Marie A. Kelly with third place filled by Mary Jo Minogue, Mary Farrell and Evelyn Shehan.
Dromoland Golf Club:
The men’s 18 hole monthly medal stroke competition at Dromoland was won by Alfred Jones with 71 from John Hourigan with a similar score.
In third place was Tadhg Lyne with 72 followed by Fintan Lahiffe (18) with 72. The gross was won by Brian Shally with 72 while the category for those with handicaps of 20 and over was won by Patrick Moylan with 76.
In the 9 hole weekly competition the winner was Noel O’Connor with 23 points from Noel Hoban with 20 points with third place filled by John Higgins with 19 points.
The ladies competition was an 18 hole player of the year event which was won by Mairead Toomey with 37 points. She won by one from Siobhan Dyar with Fran Feighery, also with 36 points, in third place followed by Niamh McDermott with 35. The gross was won by Leslie O’Flynn.
Majella Cotgreave with 22 points won the ladies 9 hole competition from Fran Feighery with 20 points with Michelle Bennett, also with 20 points in third place.
Ennis Golf Club:
The men’s competition at Ennis last weekend was for the Cahercalla cup, a golfer of the year stroke competition sponsored by Gerard & Declan Daly Insurance & Investment Brokers.
The winner was Fergal Croke (17) with 65 and he won on a countback from Alfred Jones (9). Joe Carmody (19) was third on 68 followed by Tony T. McInerney (17), also with 68. The gross was won by Alan Butler with 70 while the category winners were Mark Geraghty (11) with 66, Michael Moroney (15) with 66, Eamon Connaughton (20) with 67 and Leonard Coote (30) with 70.
The senor ladies 14 hole scramble was won by Brid Cunnigham, Martina Corbett and Marie Connolly with 51.9 from Therese Lillis, Kathleen Pyne and Clare Pyne with 55.83.
The winners of the 9 hole scramble were Alice D’arcy, Jacintha Nicholas and Ada McMahon with 28.3 from Joan Tassie, Ann Keogh and Ceilia O’Reilly with 30.0 with third place filled by Bernie Brooks, Eileen Holly and Geraldine O’Mahony with 30.3.
The winner of the silver division in the June medal competition, an 18 hole strokeplay event, was Ann A Gallery (14) with 68 nett from Suzanne Deane (15) with 73 nett.
The bronze medal was won by Helen Gallery (27) with 66 nett from Louise Guilfoyle (37) with 69 nett.
The 9 hole singles stableford competition was won by Audrey McEnery (20) with 19 points from Deborah Glynn (20) with a similar score. Maureen Lynch (16), also with 19 points, was third.
The category winners were Carmel Verling (12) with 19 points, Attracta Williams (16) with 17 points and Maureen Moloney (21) with 19 points.
Friday’s singles was won by Lily-May Horgan (40) with 44 points from Monica Finnerty (32) with 41 points with third place filled by Anthony Linnane (27) with 40 points.
There was disappointment for two club teams in the past week. The senior cup team lost out to East Clare in a game played at Ennis while the ladies Munster challenge cup team lost to Dromoland in a game played at Ennis.
Gort Golf Club:
The competition at Gort last weekend was the lady captain’s (Patsy Lyons)’ prize to the men. The 18 hole stableford competition was won by Brian Leahy (27) with 43 points from Tom Helebert (21) with 41 points. In third place with 39 points was Damien Burke (11) followed by Chris Murphy (8), also with 39 points. The gross was won by Tony Finnegan (2) with 31 points.
Friday’s open singles was won by David Kennedy (12) with 41 points while the gross was won by Joe Moran (0) with 29 points.
Last week’s ladies competition was for the Commins trophy, an 18 hole singles stableford competition which was won by Evelyn Fahey (26) with 41 points from Carmel Brody (42) with 39 points with third place filled by Maura Hanrahan (14) with 38 points. Hannah McInerney (5) won the gross with 31 points. Friday’s open singles winner was Brid Horan (37) with 37 points.
Kildysart Golf Society:
There was a great turnout for Kildysart society’s outing to Portumna on Sunday. Sean Finnucane was the winner on the day helped by a hole in one at the par 3 18th which saw him pip Mark Cottam with Ken Breen in third place.
John McNeilis won the front nine while Joe Hogan took the back nine honours. Mark Cottam remains at the top in the golfer of the year competition ahead of Bryan Hayes, Bernard Coleman and Tony McMahon.
The next outing will be on Sunday week, July 12, to Kilrush when members will play for the annual Vincent Ward cup.
Shannon Chamber classic:
Fifty five teams took part in the annual Shannon Chamber golf classic which took place at Shannon last week.
Despite facing the most challenging weather conditions of the day, the DSV team of Neil O’Brien, Evan O’Brien, Jason O’Donnell and Damian Casey produced an outstanding performance to claim first place with an impressive net score of 53.4.
Crowe’s Costcutters secured second place with a score of 55.7, while ESB Generation and Trading finished third on 56.
Individual honours also reflected the high standard of play. Martina O’Reilly (Siemens) and Jason Tobin (Vista) won the ladies’ and men’s longest drive competitions respectively, while David O’Driscoll (CSG) claimed the nearest-the-pin prize.
A perennial sell-out, the classic was proudly supported by anchor sponsor Ei Electronics, together with associate sponsors Cantor Fitzgerald, Morgan McKinley and Shannon Chamber Skillnet. The Chamber also acknowledged the generous support of its many tee sponsors, prize sponsors and goody bag sponsors whose contribution helped make the event another outstanding success.
The first eleven teams will receive prizes at a presentation ceremony in Shannon Golf club on Wednesday, July 22 at 12.30pm.
The winning team will receive four return flights for two to Malaga or Faro, four bottles of J.J. Corry Whiskey and a fourball at Dromoland Castle Golf & Country Club. The runners-up will enjoy a fourball at Trump International Golf Links, while the third-placed team will receive two €100 vouchers for the Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, Limerick, together with two VIP tickets to a Munster Rugby match.
Thanking everyone who contributed to the success of the event, Shannon Chamber CEO Helen Downes paid tribute to EI Electronics for its continued commitment as title sponsor.
Ms Downes also thanked Shannon Golf Club and its staff for their warm hospitality and the excellent condition of the course despite the weather. She acknowledged the Park Inn by Radisson Shannon Airport for providing welcome mid-course refreshments and Zagg for sponsoring the golfers’ post-golf gift.
With another highly successful event concluded, planning has already begun for the 2027 Shannon Chamber classic, which will take place at Shannon Golf club in mid-June 2027.
