THE inaugural North Munster Open singles tournament saw 12 people rise to the top to be crowned champions at Ennis Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club on Monday.

Sponsored by Ennis & Limerick Orthondic Practice, almost 150 competitors from clubs acoss Ireland came to compete in seven grades from Novice (Band 7) to the most competitive amatuer level, Band 1.

There was a large crowd in attendance on finals day on Monday who were treated to amazing tennis from the first match to last, with seven Ennis club members featuring in finals.

Cíarán O’Brien from Ennis put on an incredible performance to bring Crosshaven’s Eoin Moynihan to three sets in the MS1 final. Eoin, who will represent the Irish Over 30 team in Japan this year, defeated Cíarán 1-6 6-4 6-4. An equally entertaining Ladies section saw Laura Amy Durkan of Hillview Sports Club in Clonmel defeating Christina Costello of Nenagh Tennis Club in the final.

Speaking after the event, Ennis Tennis Club Captain Dervilla Moloney congratulated the competitors and gave heartfelt thanks for the event sponsor Ennis Orthodontic Practice. “I would like to thank Jeeves from Ennis and Limerick Orthodontic Practice for his most generous sponsorship of the tournament, which would not have been possible otherwise.

Excess food prepared for the tournament was donated to Clare Haven Services of Ennis.

ONE POINT SLAM
Ennis Tennis Club raised a significant sum of money for Cahercalla Community Hospice through a ‘one-point slam’ charity event which tournament sponsor Dr Jeeves kindly offered to match. With 64 contestants battling it out for honours, Killian Horgan was crowned champion and won a cash prize.
