THE area surrounding the Water Hydrant at Mountshannon Harbour is to be repaired as part of Clare County Council’s upcoming road overlay programme.
The commitment was given at the July meeting of the Killaloe Municipal District following a motion from Cllr Pat Burke (FG), who called on the local authority to “make good” the area around the Water Hydrant, describing it as being in “a state of disrepair.”
Welcoming the response, Cllr Burke said the area was in a “bad state” and stressed the importance of improving it, particularly given the number of people using the harbour to launch boats and trailers.
The motion was seconded by Cathaoirleach of the Killaloe Municipal District, Cllr Tony O’Brien (FF).
In a written response, Senior Executive Engineer Declan Flanagan said the council had investigated the location and found the deterioration was linked to historic reinstatement works around the Water Hydrant.
He said bollards had recently been installed to prevent vehicles from parking over the Water Hydrant and to ensure continued access in the event of an emergency.
Mr Flanagan added that, given the area’s proximity to Mountshannon Harbour, the Blue Flag Beach, the recently reopened Rectory and other local amenities, reinstatement works would be included in the forthcoming road overlay programme being carried out by Breedon Group.
The works are expected to begin during the third quarter of 2026 and will provide a permanent improvement to the surface while enhancing the appearance of the harbour area.
