BLOOD stock levels in Co Clare are critically low putting a number of surgeries at risk of cancellation.

Supplies of O-positive blood have plummeted over the past week, the lowest level recorded this year while other blood groups sit at a precarious three day supply.

A stock management letter has been issued to all hospitals advising them of the situation. This enables the Irish Blood Transfusion Service to manage the limited blood supply available more effectively across the health service.

“We are working closely with the hospital teams to prevent the need to cancel elective surgery or restrict treatment of patients,” a spokesperson for IBTS told The Clare Echo.

Extended hours will have been arranged for the Ennis blood donation clinic as a result with another clinic organized for Scariff.
