LADY captain Mary Farrell’s prizes were played for at East Clare last weekend when bright sunshine was the order of the day.
The format was 18 hole stableford and the winner of the ladies section was Deirdre O’Neill with 39 points.
She had one to spare over Ursula Hogan who was followed by Karen Fennessy (3rd), Maureen Clune (4th) and Siobhan Mulcahy.
Eileen Donnellan won the gross while the winner of the past captain’s category was Margaret McNamara.
The category winners were Noreen Doyle, Helen Ahern and Deirdre tuohy while Colette Ward (back 9), Catherine Minogue (longest drive), Margaret MacNamara (nearest the pin) and Celia Malone (8 hole competition) were other prize winners.
The lady captain’s prize to the men was won by Ray K. McInerney (16) with 48 points. Second place was filled by Michael W. O’ Halloran (20) with 41 points followed by Padraig Ryan (26) also with 41 points.
Michael Rochford (4) won the gross while the nines were won by Richard Meehan and John Clancy.
Stephen B. Moloney was nearest the pin with the longest drive won by Sean King.
Seamus O’Dwyer (26) with 46 points won the Lady captain’s prize to the senior men. Michael Noonan (22) was second with 43 points followed by John Fielding (26) with 42 points. William O’Brien won the gross.
Kevin Wallis had the longest drive while John Doyle was nearest the pin.
The lady captain’s prize to Junior girls was won by Eleanor O’Rourke from Amelia McMahon.while the junior boys winner was Odhran Johnson from Eoin Hogan.
Lahinch Golf Club:
Lahincxh’ Barton Shield team captured the West Munster title after a memorable weekend of golf at Ballyneety Golf Club.
With sweltering heat over both days, team manager Patrick Crowley used his panel of players wisely across all four matches, with Jonathan Keane, Aaron McNulty, Stephen Loftus, Bob Casey, Thomas Neenan and Mark Campbell all playing their part.
The team beat Tralee 7&6 in the Round of 16, before beating East Clare 3&1 in the quarter final.
Sunday morning brought a tight semi-final against Ballybunion which went right down to the wire before Lahinch came out on top by a single hole. The team then finished strongly in the area final, beating a strong Shannon side 10&8 to seal the title.
This sets up a trip to Shandon Park in Belfast for the All-Ireland quarter-final on August 26 to 29.
Also in action this week was the club’s women’s senior foursomes team, managed by Rose Doyle, who were beaten by Tralee in the area semi-final.
Dromoland Golf Club:
Lady captain Deirdre Cooney’s prize was played for at Dromoland at the weekend and it produced a great contest for the honours.
The first four all finished with 38 points and a countback was needed to determine placings.
Joan Dunne emerged as the winner from Leslie O’Flynn who was followed by Niamh McDermott with Mary Arthur in fourth place.
Remarkably, the next four all finished on 37 points requiring a countback also which resulted in Siobhan Dyar taking fifth place followed by Karina Doyle with Sinead Burke Keogh in seventh place followed by Colette Maguire.
The gross was won by Joan Ryan while the nines were won by Linda Kochhar and Dolores Fox with 21 and 22 points respectively. Majella Cotgreve with 36 points won the past captain’s award while the committee prize was won by Mairead Toomey with 35 points.
Nearest the pin prizes were won by Dorothy Brennan, Mary Arthur, Mairead Toomey and Siobhan Fitzpatrick while Siobhan also had the longest drive.
The lady captain’s 9 hole competition for the men was won by William Delaney with 17 points from Eddie King with 16 points.
Last week’s men’s 18 hole stableford competition was won by Niall Woods with 38 points and he won on a countback from Noel O’Connor with third spot filled by Sean G McMahon with 37 points. Vinny Derham won the category for handicappers of 20 and over with 33 points while the gross was won by Cillian O’Connor with 37 points.
The 9 hole singles competition was won by Brendan Spicer with 21 points from Cathal McMahon with 20 points and Enda Finnucane, also with 20 points.
Shannon Golf Club:
The newly inaugurated Inisfree cups ladies competition at Shannon, sponsored by Mary Carroll was played for last week.
Division 1 was won by Pauline Nally (19) with 41 points from Mary Sheehan (9) with 38 points. Shauna Moylan (26) won division 2 with 39 points from Martina Cnningham (31) with a similar score.
In division 3 the winners was Mary Fitzgibbon (33) with 42 points from Mary McGuane (36) with 36 points.
The Ei Electronics sponsored Michael O’Grady medal for men took place at the weekend when the winner was David Richardson (5) with 67. He won by a stroke from Tony Reeveds (26) with third spot filled by Brian Lonergan (8) who also had 68. They were followed by Mark Gaule (12)with 68, Keith Buckley (5) with 68 and Ben O’Neill (19) with 69. The gross was won by Damian Casey (+1) with 71.
John O’Connell (6) won category A with 69 from Eoin Duff (8), also with 69. Kevin Kirby (13) won category B with 69 from Gary Fitzgibbon (9) with 70 while category C was won by Brendan Davoran (20)with 72 from Jim Fitxzgerald (18) with 73.
The weekly men’s open singles was won by Declan O’Brien (17) with 41 points from Gerry Broderick (20) with 38 points with third spot filled by Fergus Murphy (19) with 37 points. Sean Óg Murnane (3) won the gross with 30 points.
The men’s green tee challenge winner last week was Eoghan Hanley (14) with 41 points from Adam O’Connor (14) with 39 points. The weekly 9 hole competition was won by Adam O’Connor (8) with 19 points.
Woodstock Golf Club:
Just a week after winning the president’s prize at Woodstock, Paddy Meehan (12) continued his winning form when he won the lady captain’s (Mags Nash) prize at the weekend.
He returned a score of 66 to win by a stroke from Niall Reynolds (12). They were followed by Darren Russell (7) with 69 and Kieran Nugent (36) with 70.
Brian Gilligan (-2) won the gross with 72 while the category winners were John Mulcahy (6) with 71, Seo O’Riordain (13) with 70 and Ger Browne (27) with 73.
Other prize winners were Ray Hallahan (13) with 73 (seniors), Donnacha Dunne (12) (Junior boys) with 41, Cormac Walsh (nearest the pin and long drive), Jim Willis with 30 points (guests).
Winners in the 2’s competition were Brian Gilligan (4th), Ken O’Shaughnessy (11th), Cormac Walsh (6th), Henry Butler (8th) and John Mulcahy (11th).
The president’s prize to the ladies was won by Eilis Neville (23) with 44 points from Edel Clune (39) with 39 points. They were followed byAnne Kilker (37) with 36 points, Sarah Crowe (26) with 35 points and Mary McNamara (24) with 34 points.
Mary Gleeson (29) with 33 points won the past lady captain’s category while the nines were won by Marianne McGough with 18 points and Aine Burke with 16 points. Chaye Kelly and Mary Howard were winners in the long drive category while Eleanor Miniter was nearest the pin.
In the 9 hole competition Geraldine Lyons was the winner with 29 points from Mary Holland with 18. Fran Feighery won the guests section. This week’s ladies competition will be the Eileen Murphy foursomes.
Last week’s AMR open singles was won by Mark Sweeney (6) with 42 points and he has qualified for the grand final. Ray Keogh (4) with 34 points won the gross while the category winners were Joe Keane (9) with 41 points, Jim Carmody (12) from Lahinch with 41 points and Kevin Frehill (20) with 38 points.
The open singles continues on this Thursday while the weekend competition will be the July medal sponsored by Specsavers, Ennis.
Thursday’s 9 hole mixed scramble at Woodstock was won by Ross Kenny, Colm McEnery, Colette Coakley and Vincent O’Grady with 19.6. In second place were John Clune, Imelda Duffy, Nick Germaine and Carmel O’Toole with 20 followed by Tony Neville, Teresa Sherlock, Michael Coughlan and Catherine Lyons with 21.3.
Woodstock’s junior boys suffered defeat from Waterville by the narrow margin of two points in Limerick on Monday. Waterfille now progress to the Munster final.
The ladies Ann Heskin team lost to Spanish Point 3 1/2 to 1/2.
Ennis Golf Club:
The captain’s (Noel Pilkington) fourball competition took place at Ennis last week and was won by Gerard O’Brien (23) and Pat G McInerney (13) with 46 points. They won on a countback from Ollie Kennelly (24) and Declan Hanley (28).
In third place with 45 points were Frank Owens (18) and Ken Morrissey (17) followed by Joseph Griffin (15) and Gerry Bredin (16) also with 45 points.
The overall winner in last week’s ladies 18 hole stableford competition was Peggy Costello (21) with 40 points while the category winners were Rose Enright (19) with 37 points, Maureen Lynch (32) with 39 points and Marian Irwin (43) with 35 points.
The ladies 9 hole stableford competition was won by Mary Curley (25) with 25 points from Norah Power (26) with points. The category winners were Mary Nagle (12) with 17 points, Celia Reilly (19) with 21 points and Breege Hamel (28) with 22 points.
This week’s ladies 18 hole singles competition was won by Judith Brassil (55) with 38 points and she won on a countback from Marina Varden (49). the category winners were Carmel Verling (24) with 37 points, Helen Harnett (33) with 37 points and Ceilia Reilly (39) , also with 37 points.
Ann Casey (17) with 25 points won the 9 hole singles from Fidelma Martin (20) with 20 points while the category winners were Mary Nagle (12) with 15 points, Jean Molony (17) with 18 points and Audrey McEnery (20) with 19 points.
There was a big entry for the senior’s annual memorial competition on Thursday when winner of the 18 hope stableford event was Pat Garry with 42 points. He won on a countback from Noel Pyne.
They were followed by Michael Cusack with 41 points, Martin Coffey with 41 points Damon Murphy with 41 points, Noel Pilkington with 39, Seamus Bowe with 39, Jim Farrell with 39, Noel Connellan with 38, Brian Considine with 38 and Andrew McGloin with 38. Tom Saunders with 30 points won the gross.
The 9 hole competition was won by Tony Kehoe with 23 points from Seamus Hanrahan with 17 points.
Friday’s open singles was won by Sam Doyle (21) with 40 points from Senan Ryan (11) with 39 with third place filled by Leonard Coote (29) also with 39 points.
The ladies Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy Team defeated Dungarvan on Thursday at Dungarvan. They will meet Cahir Golf in the next round of the competition
Spanish Point Golf Club:
The ladies 18 hole stableford competition at Spanish Point was won by Carol Akroyd with 39 points. In second place was Elaine Rouine with 33 points followed by Jenny O’Neill with 30 points.
Kilrush Golf Club:
The competition at Kilrush at the weekend was the Bowman’s Lane Restaurant open singles which saw Pat Shannon (19) claim top spot with 42 points. He won by two from Thomas Coffey (14) with third place filled by Tom Buckley (12), also with 40 points. Neil Browne won the gross with 9 points.
Lady captain Mary Lyons’ prize was played for at Kilrush last week and resulted in victory for Fiona Kinsella (12) with 65 nett.
She won on a countback from Celia O’Grady (30) 65 with Maureen Kinnerk (33) in third place with 66. They were followed by Imelda Griffin (50) with 67, Grace Howard (33) with 68 and Margaret Donnelly (19) with 68.
The gross was won by Anne Gallagher (13) with 85 while the nines were won by Edel Crowley and Martina Walsh.
Joan O’Malley won the past captain’s category, Ann Moody won the committee prize, Mary O’Neill had the longest drive whle Geraldine Burke was nearest the pin. In the 9 hole competition Loretta Browne won with 33 net from Nora Breen with 36.
The 4 hole beginner competition was won by Niamh O’Grady from Niamh Doyle.
The lady captain’s 9 hole competition for men was won by Michael Hogan (10) with 20 points with second spot filled by Declan O’Donovan (4) who also scored 20 points.
Gort Golf Club:
Friday’s Open 18 hole singles stableford at Gort saw Paul Smith (8) win category 1 with 39 points. The category 2 winner was Sean Dolphin (16) with 37 points while East Clare’s Sean O’Brien (16) won category 3 with 32 points. The gross was won by Joe Moran (1) with 34 points.
Kildysart Golf Society:
On a very hot day at Kilrush golf club on Sunday members of the Kildysart golf society played for the annual Vincent Ward competition. Bernard Coleman was the winner with 37 points with Jim O’Neill with 36 points in second place. They were followed by Cyril Kelly with 35, and Gary Brooks with 35. The nines were won by Michael Dolan with 21 points and Sean Finnucane with 19 points. Mark Cottam was nearest the pin while Chris Bravender had the longest drive.
Bernard Coleman’s victory helped him close the gap on Mark Cottam in the golfer of the year competition. Mark still leads with 157 points followed by Bernard on 151. In third place with 141 is Tony McMahon followed by Gary Brooks on 135, Chris Bravender on 126 with Joe Hogan in sixth place with 124. The society’s next outing will be in August to Woodstock.
Fanny O’Deas society
Thirty golfers from the Fanny O’Dea’s golf society stayed in the Helm Westport and played golf at Enniscrone and Westport golf courses over the weekend. The outings were sponsored by Casey and Meaney Construction and by Talty’s Mace.
Dermot Custy with 42 points won the singles at Enniscrone where he had one to spare over Michael Clancy. Brian Kilker with 39 points was third followed by Tom Monahan with 38 with fifth spot filled by Brian Conway, also with 38.
The format at Westport was a scramble which was won by TJ Monahan, Brian Conway, Gerry Lordan and Jim Carmody from Larry Culligan, Declan Conway, Kevin and Conor Kelly with third place filled by Brendan McMahon, Brian Kilker and Paddy Corcoran.
Captain Alan Carmody paid tribute to the sponsors, the staff at the Helm and Jamesy Meere who provided the transport. The society’s next outing is the Paddy Carmody memorial at Kilrush which will take place on Saturday August 22.
