CLARE County Council has lifted the bathing prohibition at Ballyalla bathing area following additional investigative sampling and advice from the HSE.

The prohibition was lifted on Thursday, October 15, after being introduced on September 11 due to the presence of an algal bloom.

The restriction was initially imposed on the advice of the HSE and was to remain in place until further notice.

When the ban was introduced, the council warned that blue-green algae can produce harmful toxins that may affect animals drinking the water, while contact with affected water can cause skin rashes in humans.

The council said the decision to lift the prohibition followed additional investigative sampling and consultation with the HSE.
