SHANNON hosted the competition for past lady captains of clubs in the North Munster region last week.
Woodstock’s Anne Marie Russell captured the honours with 39 points, two more that her nearest opponent..
The clubs that make up the North Munster area are Adare, Ballybunion, Ballykisteen, Castletroy, Charleville, Dromoland, East Clare, Ennis, Kilkee, Kilrush, Lahinch, Limerick, Ballyneety, Newcastle West, Rathbane, Shannon, Spanish Point, Tralee and Woodstock.
Ennis Golf Club:
It was lady captain’s Mary T McMahon prize day at Ennis on Sunday when bright sunshine greeted the big attendance. She was the first Kilmaley lady to fill the lady captain’s position at the club.
Tributes were paid to Mary by club president Philip Brigdale and men’s captain Noel Pilkington for her work for the club. The competition was 18 hole stroke with the top eighteen qualifying for a 9 hole stroke play off that evening.
Prizes were presented in front of a full house on Sunday night when the top award went to the club’s vice captain, Audrey McEnery (35) with a score of 109.50.
The runner up was Betty O’Reilly (34) with 111 followed by Brid Cunningham (24) with 109 nett (not eligible for either of the first two prizes as she didn’t have enough cards submitted). Fourth place was filled by Ethna Murphy (31) with 113.5 while the gross was won by Patricia Moroney (18) with 145.
The leading qualifier was Kitty Morris. Division 1 was won by Nuala Corry (24) with 117 nett and division 2 by Geraldine O’ Mahoney (36) with 114 nett.
Bridget Hoey with 121.5 nett won the past captain’s category, Patricia O’Reilly with 119.5 won the best granny category.
Other prize winners were Ann A. Gallery (best drive at hole 18), Louise Guilfoyle (nearest the pin), Caroline Magee (front 9) and Bridie Hanrahan (back 9).
The 9 hole stableford competition was won by Ada McMahon (24) with 19 points from Mary Gardner (18) with 17 points. Clare Pyne (14) won the gross while the category winners were Maeve Culligan Flouch (22) with 17 points and Bernie Brooks (26) with 16 points. Eileen T. Corry (25) won the best granny category with 16 points.
The guests category, a modified 3 ball scramble, was won by Ronan Herbert, Michael O’Reilly and Andrew McGloin with 91 points and they won on a countback from Dave and Ben Kenneally and Brian Logue with third spot filled by Alan Butler, Eamon Kelly and TJ Scanlon with 90 points.
Winner of the lady captain’s prize to the men was Michael M. Vaughan (20) with 59 from Fintan McEvoy (26) with 65. Darragh Murphy (7) was third with 67 followed by Jim O’Neill (27) with 68. The gross was won by John McInerney with 72 while the category winners were Ian Myatt(10) with 66, Andrew Turner (14) with 67, Flan Glynn (20) with 68 and Michael O’Grady (25) with 66. Mark O’Brien had a hole in one at the second.
The lady captain’s mixed foursomes, sponsored by Martin and Agnes O’Malley, Clare Car and Tractor Parts was won by Audrey McEnery and T.J. Scanlan (22) with 42 points. They won by two from Nuala and Eamonn Corry (20) with third spot filled by Josephine Tone and Seamus McEnery (11) on 38 points. Mary Nagle and Ronan Herbert (11) with 27 points won the gross. Brian Logue had a hole in one at the second.
Last Tuesday’s senior ladies 14 hole competition was won by Brid Cunnigham, Ada McMahon and Gert Finn from Therese Lilis, Joan Tassie and Claire Kenneally.
The ladies 18 hole singles stableford competition was won by Bridie Hanrahan (20) with 44 points while the category winners were Suzanne Deane (14) with 33 points, Maureen Lynch (27) with 35 points and Mary Curley (44) with 30 points.
Ceilie Reilly (19) with 21 points won the 9 hole competition while the division winners were Anne Kelly (12) with 19 points, Anne Casey (17) with 21 points and Bernadette Coffey (23) with 20 points.
Thursday’s senor men’s competition was a team of four which was won by Dick O Connell, Neil Cremin, Jim Hennessey and Frank Cullinan with 80 points. In second place with 76 points were Kieran O Loughlin, Tim Scanlon and Pat P McInerney followed by Ger Hanrahan, Michael Clancy, Paul Mockler and Gerry Kelly with 75 points.
They were followed by Ollie O Loughlin, J.K Considine, Eamonn Kelly and Sal Milan with 74, Michael Meagher, Martin Coffey, John R Ryan and Michael Cusack with 73 while sixth spot was filled by Damon Murphy, Tim Kelly, Dominick Murray and Pat Garry with 73.
Friday’s open singles was won by Lily-May Horgan (37) with 47 points from Michael Studdert (23) with 43 points with third spot filled by Gary Cunningham (19) with 42 points. Sarah Cunningham won the gross with 31 points.
Saturday’s men’s singles stableford was won by Ross McLoughlin (18) with 39 points from Derek Healy (11) with 37 points with John Considine (14) in third place with 37 points. Ronan Herbert won the gross with 35 points.
Shannon Golf Club:
Last week’s Diamond jubilee team of four modified scramble at Shannon was won by Rory Hennessy (6), Aaron Costelloe (9), John Cahalan(12) and Graham Culleton (6) with 57 points.
Jean Murphy (13), Noleen Neylon (9), Jane Kennedy (11) and Carmel McMahon (23) were the best ladies team with 53 points while the best in the mixed category were Aine Twomey (8), Gerard Butler (20), Sylvia O’Brien (28) and Valerie O’Shea (31) with 58 points.
Last week’s men’s 9 hole competition was won by Michael Corry (4) with 18 points.
The men’s green tee challenge was won by Gary O’Brien (10) with 41 points from Christopher Price (11) with 39 points with third place filled by Stephen Litherland (12) with 38 points. The gross was won by C.J. Kelly (6) with 31 points.
Wednesday’s men’s open singles was won by Thomas Nelson (12) with 38 points from Kevin Meehan (11) with 37 with Derek Enright (11) in third spot with 35. The gross was won by Bryan Power (2) with 30 points.
Lady members at Shannon played for the September medal last week when Margaret Ryan (34) captured the honours with 70 nett. She won on a countback from Rose Doyle (11) with Eileen Carey (19), also with 70 in third place. Jane Kennedy (12) was fourth with 72 while the gross was won by Madge Young (10) with 81. Rose Doyle was a winner in the 2’s competition at the 5th hole
Marie McLaughlin (16) with 16 points won the lady vice captain’s 9 hole stableford competition.Next week’s competition is an 18 hole stableford with alternate days of Sunday and Monday.
Woodstock Golf Club:
Last week’s 9 hole scramble was won by Gerry Kelly, Jarlath Fahy, Martina McEnery and Ross Keyes with 22.6.
In second place with 23.2 were Paddy Meehan, Barry Keane, Mary Holland and Robert Keogh.
The AMR open singles winner last week was Niall Reynolds (10) with 43 points and he has qualified for the grand final while the gross was won by Jason Considine (3) with 37 points.
Category 2 was won by Kenny O’Shaughnessy (13) with 40 points while the category 3 winner was Jonathan Carrig (21) with 39 points. Winners in the 2’s competition were John Dreelan, Ken O’Shaughnessy,
Jason Considine and Ronan Horgan
The weekend competition was a club singles which was won by Jamie Ivors (10) with 44 points while the gross was won by Declan Reidy (6) with 36 points.
Category 1 honours went to Barry McNamara (9) with 43 points from Kieran Dromey (7) with 39 points.
Paudie O’Connell (12) with 37 points won category 2 from Barry Rynne (18) with 36 points while the category 3 winner was Tony Barrett (24) with 38 points.
Winners in the 2’s competition were Michael Coughlan, Carl Hale, Kieran Browne, Michael Canty, Cathal Nagle and Sean Crowe.
In the ladies medal competition, Niamh O’Regan won category A with 71 nett while Margaret Ann Killeen won category B with 72 nett. The top eight in the ladies club championship this week qualify for matchplay.
The open singles continues on this Thursday while the weekend competition will be the Halfway House club championship, 36 holes to be played over Saturday and Sunday. There are category prizes for this event.
Kilrush Golf Club:
The Central Shoes ladies 18 hole stableford competition at Kilrush was won by Anne Gallagher (13) with 36 points.
Edel Crowley (18) with 34 points won category A from Sheila O’Grady (19) with a similar score.
Category 2 was won by Clare Pyne (26) with 34 points from Mary Downes (30), also with 34 points while category 3 was won by Martina Fox (41) with 35 points and she won on a countback from Carmel O’Flaherty (40) who also had 35 points.
Spanish Point Golf Club:
The ladies ‘Play in Pink’ competition at Spanish Point was won by
Niamh Toland with 48 points. In second place with 42 points was Honor Kyne followed by Bŕid Queally with 41, Eileen McNamara with 37 and Therese O’Brien Kelly with 37.
East Clare Golf Club:
The overall winner in the Olive Fahy Memorial Cup competition at East Clare was John Duffy (11) with 43 points.
He was followed in the men’s section by Stephen Lynch (38) with 38 points with third spot filled by Edmund Burke (19), also with 38 points. William O’Brien (5) won the gross with 29 points.
In the ladies section the winner was Deirdre Tuohy (32) with 41 points from Noreen Skehan (26) with 36 points with third spot filled by Maureen Clune (31), also with 36 points. Eileen Donnellan (16) won the gross with 16 points.
Last week’s senior men’s competition was won by Mike Noonan, Jackie McHugh, and Jim Willis with 86 points and they had two to spare over Paddy O’Brien, Pat Corry and Chris Davis with third place filled by Jim Lynch, Brian Corry and Jim Bradley also with 84 points.
President Alan O’Neill’s prize will be played for this weekend.
Dromoland Golf Club:
Patrick Vaughan with 39 points won the men’s 18 hole stableford competition at Dromoland at the weekend on a countback from Derek Ryan with Colm Sheils a point back on 38 in third place.
The gross was won by Ross Kenny with 34 points while Vinny Derham won the category for handicaps of 20 and over with 36 points.
Sean Devane with 21 points won the 9 hole competition from Chris O’Donovan with 20 and Kenneth Arthur with 19.
The senior men’s competition was won by Brendan Lennon and William Fitzgerald from Jerry O’Gorman and Ger Ryan with third place filled by Con Ryan and Peter Ronan.
The ladies player of the year stableford compettion was won by Mairead Bergin with 39 points from Joan Ryan with 38 points with the gross category won by Mairead Twomey.
Mary Arthur with 20 points won the 9 hole competition from Niamh McDermot who also had 20 points.
Lahinch Golf Club:
The final social mixed foursomes of the season at Lahinch will be on the Castle course on this Friday, August 28. when there will be a shotgun start at 6pm and those playing are asked to check in at 5.30p.m. The presentation of prizes will follow.
Gort Golf Club:
Friday’s 18 hole singles stableford, at Gort saw Tony Curran (10) with 36 points win category 1. Category 2 was won by Colie Smyth (17) with 39 points and category 3 by Adrian Nolan (26) with 43 points. The gross was won by Enda Craddock (3) with 29 points.
Rose Finnegan’s President’s prize was played for on Saturday when the winner was David McAllen with 84 from Joe Byrne with a similar score.
Ronnie Killeen was third with 83, followed by Alan Bond with 83 and Martin Callanan with 81. Gavin Lally won the gross with 76.
The nett was won by Joe McGauley with 50 while the category winners were Shane Neylon with 75, Michael Killeen with 81 and Cathal Curtin with 78.. Niall Finnegan with 80 won the past captain’s category.
The president’s prize to the ladies was won by Niamh Carr with 81, from Joan Fogarty with 78. They were followed by Bernie Diskin with 75, Sara Broderick with 72 and Patricia Reddy with 72. Hannah McInerney won the gross with 59 while the nett was won by Regina Malone with 39 points.Category winners were Marcella Killeen with 72, Teresa Mahon with 69 and Bridie Fahey with 35 points.
In the singles competition sponsored by Murphy Heating, Kinvara the overall winner was Martin Nicholson (31) with 41 points while the category winners were Derek Kinsella (11) with 40 points, Ray Dolan (15) with 39 points and John Doody (27) with 39 points. Joe Burke (3) with 35 points won the gross.
Fanny O’Deas society
Fanny O’Dea’s golf society played its annual memorial tournament, remembering Paddy Carmody, at Kilrush last week.
Paddy’s son Alan, the society’s 2026 captain, sponsored the event. Thirty four played, all trying to win the Paddy Carmody Memorial Claret Jug.
Alan Jackson with 46 points won with two points to spare over Brian Gilligan. A further two points back on 42 was Tom Monahan with Daniel Delap in fourth place with 41 followed by Jim Carmody with 40. The gross was won by Brian Conway and the nines by T.J. Monahan and Tony McMahon.
Nearest the pin was Danny Lynch while Brendie McMahon had the longest drive. The society’s next outing is on September 19 to Nenagh.
Kildysart Golf Society:
Kildysart golf society members enjoyed the 6th outing of the season on Sunday at Woodstock.
Captain Cyril Kelly won with 37 points, ahead of Josh Bravender with 36, Padraig O’Dubhslaine with 34 and Bryan Hayes, also with 34. Mark Cottam won the front 9 with 20 points, and Paul Keane the back 9 with 19 points.
Mark Cottam remains ahead of the field in the Golfer of the Year competition, in front of Bernard Coleman, Tony McMahon and Chris Bravender. The society’s next outing is to Newcastle West on September 19 when members will play for the captain’s prize.
