ADDITIONAL PARKING will not be introduced at the Glencragga estate in Newmarket-on-Fergus.

Officials in Clare County Council said in November 2020 that they would consider the provision of additional parking and the following September warned this could lead to a reduction to the estate’s green area.

In its latest update on the matter, the local authority insisted that adequate parking currently exists at Glencragga. “It would not be advisable to introduce a new access at this location due to the proximity to the Glencragga road junction, the impact on parking, pedestrians and existing traffic using the R458,” senior executive engineer in the Shannon MD, Tom Mellett outlined.

He flagged that householders presently have access to the rear of their properties “via an access road running inside the wall parallel to the R458”.

Citing the lack of parking for houses 1-10 at Glencragga, Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) had issued his third appeal to improve the area in the space of twenty nine months. He suggested a new opening onto the Ennis and Limerick Rd may “alleviate the problem for residents of this estate”.

Speaking at a recent sitting of the Shannon MD, Cllr McMahon stated that Glencragga was “a very old estate in Newmarket-on-Fergus, problems have arisen with modern society. There are a lot of cars parking on the main road from the Ministers Cross down, a new problem could be created here”. He told the meeting that residents requested he highlight the matter once again. He appealed to Mellett to meet residents to “point out the scenarios that exist from an engineering viewpoint”.

Voicing his full support, Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) commented, “I am acquainted with a couple of the residents, the reply says they have access through the rear but that is not the case for some of the residents, there is very little that could be done to give them access”.

A meeting with residents would be welcome, Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF) agreed, “we need to see it to know what the issues are”.
